This research, written by the Department of Journalism and Strategic Media's Dr. Robby Byrd, examines how the press reported the AIDS epidemic in New Orleans from 1985 to 1991, a time when the gay and le***an community underwent significant social and political changes.

New Orleans g**s and le***ans faced a new enemy in the early 1980s after a period of unprecedented visibility in the late 1970s—AIDS.

This study examines two newspapers’ responses and the evolution of narratives and perspectives presented by each.

Each year, the National Communication Association (NCA) honors the best in Communication, presenting awards for outstanding scholarship, teaching, and professional service, as well as the NCA Legacy Scholarship. The awards recognize a wide range of contributions to the Communication discipline.

This year, Dr. Andre Johnson, Professor of Rhetoric and Media Studies at the University of Memphis, won the NCA's Douglas W. Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award.

Dr. Johnson has a noticeable and convincing impact on rhetorical studies through presence and encouragement that extends beyond conventional academic networks.

His work is adventurous, groundbreaking, and trailblazing. They examine oratory with an eye toward religious discourse, rhetorical appeals, and worldmaking.

Apart from prolific scholarship, Dr. Johnson also mentors students through various means including, but not limited to, co-authorship.

Moreover, Dr. Johnson’s work with the Colored-Conventions Project, public-facing appearances, and research distinguish their undeniable influence on rhetorical studies.

The Douglas W. Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award, first presented in 1987, honors scholars who have executed research programs in rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism and/or public address studies. Recipients must demonstrate intellectual creativity, perseverance, and impact on academic communities through multiple publications and presentations around a rhetorical topic or theme.

Each year, the National Communication Association (NCA) honors the best in Communication, presenting awards for outstanding scholarship, teaching, and professional service, as well as the NCA Legacy Scholarship. The awards recognize a wide range of contributions to the Communication discipline.

This year, Dr. DiArron M., a former UofM PhD Graduate student, won the Marcella E. Oberle Award for Outstanding Teaching in Grades K-12.

Dr. DiArron M., is an educator at Redan High School, a Title I institution in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

He spearheaded the establishment of their forensics and debate team. He introduced concepts such as "Nommo," the Colored Conventions, and the rhetoric and life of Georgian Henry McNeal Turner in AP US History.

Notably, he coaches athletes to effectively convey their messages to the media and public.

DiArron volunteers his time to anything that drives student achievements and shares their knowledge, skills, and strategies with colleagues. Inspiring students through a commitment to high standards and quality education exemplifies the qualities of the Oberle Award.

This award is sponsored by the NCA Teaching and Learning Council and has been conferred since 1987.

Each year, the National Communication Association (NCA) honors the best in Communication, presenting awards for outstanding scholarship, teaching, and professional service, as well as the NCA Legacy Scholarship. The awards recognize a wide range of contributions to the Communication discipline.

This year, Dr. Marina Levina, Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Memphis, won the NCA's Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award.

She's served and led both NCA and the broader discipline for over 20 years.

Holding a variety of leadership positions, Dr. Levina highlights significant issues of our times while mentoring others and engaging with other professional communities.

Dr. Levina has articulated several inclusion-based goals for Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies as current editor-elect, including a special issue on Indigenous cultural studies; forum sections on antisemitism and Islamophobia, and mobility; and promotion of critical disability studies.

Without a doubt, Dr. Levina leads by giving voice to and honoring those typically invisible in our scholarship and society.

The Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award was created in 1978 to honor Robert J. Kibler. It was first presented in 1979. The award recognizes those qualities epitomized by Professor Kibler's professional and personal life. These qualities include dedication to excellence, commitment to the profession, concern for others, vision of what could be, acceptance of diversity and forthrightness. The award will generally, but not necessarily, be given to a person who has exhibited those qualities over his or her career.

Each year, the National Communication Association (NCA) honors the best in Communication, presenting awards for outstanding scholarship, teaching, and professional service, as well as the NCA Legacy Scholarship. The awards recognize a wide range of contributions to the Communication discipline.

This year, Dr. Noor Ghazal Aswad, Assistant Professor of Political Rhetoric at the University of Alabama and former PhD graduate student at the UofM, won the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award.

Dr. Ghazal Aswad presents a nuanced project that aims to provide marginalized communities access to rhetorical research.

She's a leader in and model for community-engaged research—seeing the research process as incomplete until it has reached the audiences it intends to empower.

Moreover, Dr. Ghazal Aswad proposes to communicate with groups whom our field might otherwise never contact.

Her career is only beginning, yet the impact of this awardee’s work is already reshaping the academic and rhetorical landscape, providing a complex picture of radical rhetoric, decolonization, and care.

The Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award was established by Mrs. Wallace and the family of the late distinguished rhetorical scholar, and is given to foster and promote philosophical, historical, or critical scholarship in rhetoric and public discourse. The award is presented to scholars who have completed the Ph.D. within the past 10 years or who are well advanced in doctoral studies in rhetoric and public address.
