Tennessee ranks 43rd in the country for access to dental care. Eighty-six of its 95 counties are designated dental shortage areas. Six counties have no dentists at all.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry is working to change that, through a growing network of clinics, expanded class sizes, and a $53 million statewide investment in getting more dentists into the communities that need them most.

In our upcoming magazine, we tell the full story of how a generous offer of office space in Union City became a model for delivering dental care to thousands of Tennesseans who need it most.

The UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy extends its congratulations to Christopher Finch, PharmD, on his appointment as Dean of the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy.

A graduate of the College, Dr. Finch has served UTHSC with distinction as a professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Sciences, where his leadership in educational innovation, faculty development, and clinical excellence will be deeply missed.

While we will miss his presence at UTHSC, we are grateful for his meaningful role in strengthening our institution and the broader pharmacy profession.

We are proud to see him take on this important leadership role and wish him continued success in the years ahead.

Before she was a dental student, Hannah Black was a high school science teacher at a Title I school, watching her students struggle to access basic dental care. That experience pointed her toward dentistry and eventually to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. Now in her first year at the College of Dentistry, she is channeling that same drive to teach people about the joys of dentistry

For patients with cardiac amyloidosis, getting an accurate diagnosis can take years. Jon Wall, PhD, and his team developed an imaging tracer that, when injected into a patient, lights up those protein deposits so doctors can clearly see them for the first time. In May 2026, Bayer announced that a large clinical trial confirmed the tracer works, accurately detecting the disease across 19 medical centers in the U.S.

The UT Health Sciences Historical Collections holds firsthand accounts from a young doctor working through Memphis's devastating 1878 yellow fever epidemic, rare illustrated medical texts dating back to 1552, materials from a pioneering sickle cell researcher who helped shape St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and nursing theory papers that draw scholars from as far away as Japan.

In our upcoming magazine, we explore this remarkable archive and the work of Jennifer Langford, the university's first archivist, who has spent more than a decade preserving and growing this collection.

The full story arrives in June with the launch of the Health Sciences Magazine.

Graduation day belongs to more than just the graduate. It belongs to the parents who made sacrifices, the siblings who cheered them on, the partners who talked them through the hard semesters, and the friends who showed up every step of the way.
