Freeman Optional School offers challenging academic in a unique learning environment for students in Kindergarten - Eighth grades. The school has received national, state, and local recognition for its outstanding performance, including receiving Tennessee's State Distinguished Title I Award for Exceptional Student Performance for 2011-12. .S. Department of Education's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Blue Ribbon Award. Freeman is the only Shelby County Schools Optional School for grades one through eight attended only by Optional transfer students. Freeman students benefit from the continuity and seamless transition between grade levels that a first-through-eighth-grade school provides. With a focus on Enriched Academics and College Preparatory programs, Freeman provides students with the rigor they need to prepare for high school and post-secondary studies. Freeman, the coursework is accelerated, expectations are high, and the curriculum is designed to stimulate creativity and develop critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to be self-motivated, practice self-discipline, and maintain a positive attitude toward school and learning. To meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles, the faculty offers frequent opportunities for individual and group projects, research, seminars, and field trips. Homework assignments are designed to help reinforce, broaden, and expand the curriculum.
