Freeman Optional School offers challenging academic in a unique learning environment for students in Kindergarten - Eighth grades. The school has received national, state, and local recognition for its outstanding performance, including receiving Tennessee's State Distinguished Title I Award for Exceptional Student Performance for 2011-12. Freeman Optional School was also a 2008 recipient of the U

.S. Department of Education's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Blue Ribbon Award. Freeman is the only Shelby County Schools Optional School for grades one through eight attended only by Optional transfer students. Freeman students benefit from the continuity and seamless transition between grade levels that a first-through-eighth-grade school provides. With a focus on Enriched Academics and College Preparatory programs, Freeman provides students with the rigor they need to prepare for high school and post-secondary studies. Freeman, the coursework is accelerated, expectations are high, and the curriculum is designed to stimulate creativity and develop critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to be self-motivated, practice self-discipline, and maintain a positive attitude toward school and learning. To meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles, the faculty offers frequent opportunities for individual and group projects, research, seminars, and field trips. Homework assignments are designed to help reinforce, broaden, and expand the curriculum.

JP Freeman will be hosting cheer tryouts for all young ladies in grades 4-8 for the 2026-2027 academic year June 15-17, 2026, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm in the gymnasium. Camp tryout fee will be $20. No experience is required as the new coach, Mr. Jones will teach all who have the heart and desire to cheer for team JP Freeman!

Two promotional ceremonies in 1 day on 5/19/26. Kindergarten celebration will be held at 9:30 am in the gymnasium. Fifth Grade Promotional will be held at 12:30 pm in the gymnasium. No large balloons, large signs, or noise makers will be allowed. Also registration support for the 2026-2027 academic year will be provided in the STEM Lab on the main hallway before and after each ceremony! STEM camp registration for middle school students will be conducted as well.

The JPF Eighth Grade Promotional Ceremony will start at 9:30 am on Monday, May 18, 2026, in the JP Freeman Gymnasium. Doors will open at 8:45 am to allow family and guests of the students to get seated. No tickets are required. Please remember that balloons, air horns, and noise makers are prohibited and will not be allowed inside the building. All 8th graders are expected to arrive at 8:00 am to get their regalia, get lined up, and take their class photo before the ceremony begins. We look forward to celebrating this milestone in a dignified and auspicious manner.
