UW-Stout ESL Institute

Welcome to University of Wisconsin-Stout’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute. This ESL program offers English immersion courses to non-native English speakers who would like to communicate more effectively and improve their performance in their professional, academic and personal lives. Classes are small (20 or fewer students), and sessions are eight weeks long, beginning in September,

January, March and June. Students in the ESL program study English 20 hours a week, including time in a computer lab. The ESL Institute offers four levels of instruction. After being tested on arrival at the Institute, students will be placed into an appropriate level. Most students spend between a semester and two years to complete the program. Upon successful completion of the entire ESL program, ESL students can be accepted directly into UW-Stout and begin taking regular academic courses if they meet UW-Stout academic requirements. They do not need to take the TOEFL test, re-apply to Stout, or pay an additional application fee. Students in the ESL program at UW-Stout also enjoy:

Experiencing American culture on a small, friendly campus
Taking day trips to local sites of interest
Getting involved in university sports and other activities
Receiving academic support by working with tutors
