CNIE/Cybersecurity Student Homelab Spotlight:

Another great example of “learning by doing” at UW–Stout 👏

Shoutout to another CNIE/Cyber freshman student Matthew Urich for building a full-stack enterprise-style home lab, combining networking, systems, and services in one integrated environment.

His setup includes:

Cisco routers (2811, 2921) with CME and IPsec tunneling
IP phones and legacy telephony integration
Dell R730 running Proxmox with services like NGINX, Pi-hole, NextCloud, and more
TrueNAS storage with RAID configuration
Self-hosted services accessible via his own domain

From VoIP to cloud-style services!

👏 Great work, Matthew Urich!

CNIE/Cybersecurity Student Homelab Spotlight:

Big shoutout to our freshman student Nick Best for building a production-grade secure home lab 👏

Instead of just following a textbook, Nick implemented a “Cloud DMZ” using:

• VPS gateway to hide his home IP
• WireGuard for an encrypted tunnel (bypassing CGNAT/double NAT)
• Caddy + Docker for automated HTTPS and service isolation

Great to see a freshman applying real-world, zero trust architecture in practice—no open ports, secure by design, and aligned with how modern infrastructure is built.

Happy Homelab Monday!

Today we are showcasing Ronald Medvecz's Homelab.

He built it for the workstation and server final project, and is now using it to explore new technologies, and learning about administering servers.

Right now he has CasaOS installed so he can quickly spin up projects, some of his more notable projects he used this server for is his media server, which is hosting his own media files, as well as a game server so he and his friends can play Minecraft together!

It does not matter how big or small your Homelab is as long as you are learning its a good Homelab! Cannot wait to see this lab grow! 🥳🥳🥳

We had so many students enroll in CNIT 441, that we had to come up with a new pod. Our classrooms were built with 20 students in mind, but the larger classes we needed to accommodate 24 students. We want to give the students as much hands on experience as possible, so we had to come up with a solution to fit 4 more students.

We added an extra table with a small rack on wheels so if any other classrooms needed another pod we can wheel it over! The new table really fills in the empty space in the middle of 176 as well!

So happy to see how the rack turned out, and the students love it as it gives them more time working with the equipment!

Happy Homelab Monday!!!

Today we are showcasing Ethan Coulthard and his friends mini rack homelab! They just finished setting up Jellyfin to host their own media. Its slowly expanding to suite their needs, and may feature a pa-220 sometime in the future. There is only one thing better than homelabbing and its sharing it with a friend!

Super excited to see where this lab will grow! Thanks to Ethan Coulthard for sharing his homelab!

🎉 Happy Home Lab Monday! 🎉

Today we will be showcasing Andrew Solberg's humble lab. He set up a raspberry pi in his parents basement and ran pihole on it to give his family network wide ad blocking!

Andrew's lab showcases CNIE/Cybersec Students creativity by working with the tools he has been provided and even making a wonderful little chair out of two paint cans and a carpet square!

If you are thinking about starting a home lab you don't need much, a raspberry pi or even a old laptop would suffice.

Students, are you ready?

The career fair is an amazing opportunity to network with industry professionals and connect with Stout alumni, like Riley Kangas at the Acuity booth and Tanner Vaas at the Verkada booth.

💼 Tips for success:

- Come prepared with a few questions to get conversations started

- Dress professionally

- Bring several printed copies of your updated resume

- Keep a digital copy on your phone, just in case

I’m looking forward to seeing all the CNIE and Cybersecurity students there — along with our awesome Stout alumni!

🎉 Welcome, Incoming CNIE & Cybersecurity Freshmen! 🎉

We’re thrilled to welcome the Fall 2025 class to the CNIE and Cybersecurity programs! With how fast these programs are growing, next year we might need a bigger room… and maybe a bigger camera 😂

We’re also excited to celebrate a huge milestone – our Cybersecurity program has been ranked Top 25 in the nation! 🏆
