If you need any last-minute ideas for your Thanksgiving menu, take a page from Fannie Merritt Farmer's 1911 cookbook, "Catering for Special Occasions with Menus & Recipes." Farmer recommends a variety of delectable dishes for your table including popped corn, turnip croquettes, boiled onions, and Puritan pudding. Yum!

Please note our holiday hours this week. The Archives will be closed on Thursday, November 27. We will be open for remote research assistance on Friday, November 28 at [email protected].

Attention, philatelists! We are shining a on new additions to the collection of late alumnus and former Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Curriculum, Lawrence "Larry" Wright. Alongside the mayor of Menomonie, Wright led a project to designate the city as a "Bicentennial Community Station." For one day only, the Menomonie post office hosted a postal substation within its lobby to celebrate the 200th birthday of the Constitution on September 17, 1988. The Bicentennial Committee created a limited run of custom envelopes and a cancellation stamp, which were only available to the lucky few who attended. You can see the original design for the envelope seal and cancellation in the UW-Stout Archives.

Like the rest of the country, Menomonie planned a variety of celebrations to mark this national milestone, including a sock hop hosted by UW-Stout's own Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity. What local events would you like to see for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence?
