Learning together to better serve our communities! 💙💛
Our third-semester occupational therapy students joined students from Nursing, CUW Speech-Language Pathology, Medical Imaging , Social Work, and Athletic Training for the Community Action Poverty Simulation, an interprofessional education experience.
Working together in simulated “families,” students navigated a month of life at or near the poverty level—balancing work, childcare, finances, and social services while facing limited resources, unexpected life events, and systemic barriers.
Developed by the Missouri Community Action Network, this simulation encourages participants to rethink the daily challenges experienced by individuals living in poverty. Through collaboration and reflection, students explored how interconnected challenges can affect access to healthcare and participation in daily life.
Experiences like this help prepare future healthcare professionals to provide compassionate, collaborative care that considers the whole person. 💙
