The Computer Science department at Concordia University Wisconsin is excited to host a chapter of the ACM-W, the ACM’s Women in Computing organization. From the ACM-W website: “[The] ACM-W supports, celebrates, and advocates internationally for the full engagement of women in all aspects of the computing field, providing a wide range of programs and services to ACM members and working in the large
r community to advance the contributions of technical women.” As of February 2016, we are the first (and only) private college in Wisconsin to have an active chapter of the ACM-W. Our ACM-W chapter – GRACE, which stands for Girls Rocking Algorithms, Computing, and Electronics and pays homage to computing pioneer Grace Hopper – is a campus organization that allows for networking and fellowship among women in computer science and information technology in light of our vocation in Christ. We look forward to having events throughout the school year such as a “Take Apart a Computer Day,” programming information days, and networking opportunities for students who are looking ahead to graduation and life after college. Our logo, created by CUW graphic design student Michael Ramthun, includes the symbols for both male and female. The binary number 011011 converts to 27 decimal, a reference to Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” As women of computer science and information technology, we embrace God’s unique calling in our lives and pursue our vocations passionately, knowing that “in the Lord [our] labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
