UC Merced Sociology

UC Merced Sociology With 11 faculty members, sociology registers some of the highest course enrollments on campus. At the graduate level, we offer a Ph.D. degree.

Sociology at UC Merced emphasizes the areas of social stratification/inequality, immigration, race/ethnicity, gender studies, education, political and collective empowerment, and globalization. At the undergraduate level, we offer a major and a minor in sociology. Our nationally recognized faculty are affiliated with several graduate training initiatives on campus and frequently involve graduate a

nd undergraduate students in ongoing research projects. Indeed, in a recent external program review by outside experts, the final report concluded that the sociology "program is very well aligned with the institutional priorities of UC Merced. UC Merced’s focus on teaching, research, and public service – is directly connected with the Sociology unit’s priorities and mission. The faculty members in this unit appear to be deeply engaged in their teaching, as evidenced not only by their stated commitment to students, but also from the perspectives of the graduate and undergraduate students we interviewed. Their research is well-renowned; this is a group of faculty members who are making path-breaking and essential contributions to sociological knowledge."

Thank you for your continuous efforts in advocating for survivors in our Valley! We appreciate your dedication and commitment to making a difference in people's lives.

In honor of , I'd like to highlight Gameelah Mohammed, a Victim Program Specialist for Valley Crisis Center in Merced. In 2019, shortly after being employed by Valley Crisis Center, she founded an anti-trafficking group named "the Merced County Freedom Coalition." The Coalition assists and educates local law enforcement, government agencies, and several other community partners to foster greater collaboration in the fight against human trafficking.

Gameelah's motivation for victim advocacy stems from her experiences as a woman of color in a culture that does not typically see women in leadership positions. Thank you for your continuous efforts in advocating for survivors in our Valley!

Ana Padilla, executive director of the Community and Labor Center, was featured in The New York Times regarding California's new stay-at-home order. “It will do less for workers who have no choice but to work in low-wage, essential jobs, in which they frequently come into contact with others,” she said. https://nyti.ms/33ZU0zb via The New York Times

As cases surge and hospital beds fill up, federal officials said a vaccine could be distributed to as many as 24 million people by mid-January.
