As many of you know, cybersecurity is becoming more relevant in our work environments and personal spaces. A relatively new type of spam/phishing on the rise is Smishing. Below is information on this new technique, how to identify a smishing attempt, and what to do.

What is Smishing:

Smishing is a phishing cybersecurity attack carried out over mobile text messaging, also known as SMS phishing, and categorized as a type of social engineering attack that relies on exploiting human trust rather than technical exploits.

How Does it Work:

Deception and fraud are the core components of any SMS phishing attack. As the attacker assumes an identity you might trust, you will likely succumb to their requests. The driving factors of this deception are three-fold:

1. Trust: Cybercriminals lower their target's skepticism by posing as legitimate individuals and organizations. As a more personal communication channel, SMS texts also naturally lower a person's defenses against threats.
2. Context: Using a situation that could be relevant to targets allows an attacker to build an effective disguise. The message feels personalized, which helps it override any suspicion that it might be spam.
3. Emotion: By heightening a target's emotions, attackers can override their target's critical thinking and spur them into rapid action.

How Can I Protect Myself:

Don't be misled by smishing scams. Remember the following:

--Government agencies, banks, and other legitimate companies never ask for personal or financial information, like usernames, passwords, PINs, or credit or debit card numbers, via text message.
--Don't be rushed. Smishing scams attempt to create a false sense of urgency by implying that an immediate response is required or that there is a limited response time.
--Don't "click" open links in unsolicited text messages. Clicking the link may infect your mobile device with a virus or malware designed to steal the personal or financial information stored on the device.
--Don't call a telephone number listed in an unsolicited text message. Scam artists often use email-to-text technology, shortcodes, or spoofed local numbers to hide their identities. You should contact any bank, government, agency, or company identified in the text message using the information listed in your records.
--Don't respond to smishing messages; even to ask the sender to stop contacting you. Responding to smishing messages verifies that your phone number is active and that you are willing to open such messages, which may increase the unsolicited text messages you receive.
--Use caution when providing your cell phone number or other information in response to pop-up advertisements and "free trial" offers. This personal information can be easily bought, sold, and traded, and make you a target for smishing scams.
--Never provide your personal or financial information in response to text messages from unknown senders. Verify the sender's identity and take the time to ask yourself why the sender is asking for your information.
--Use the same safety and security practices on your cell phone as you do on your computer: be cautious of text messages from unknown senders and unusual text messages from senders you know, and keep your security software and applications up to date.

If you receiving a Smishing message, you can follow the information in the links below from AT&T's or Verizon's site showing how to report SMS Phishing. Most carriers will have similar information and also support spam reporting by texting to 7726.

https://about.att.com/pages/cyberaware/ni/blog/forward_7726

https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-301493/

You can permanently delete the text and block the number on your phone, but by also reporting it, you allow the carrier to crack down on problems within their network.

Here's how to report Spam messages if you are receiving unwanted text messages.
