Mathematical modeling competition opportunity for undergraduate students!!!

The UC Merced Applied Math department could cover registration of interested teams! Let us know if you are interested! Registration opens on 1 August 2018.

The interested undergraduate student team (3 students per team) challenge takes place over a week-long period that begins on Friday, 19 October 2018, at each team’s individual home campus and culminates on Saturday, 27 October 2018, at a regional host site. Beginning on Friday, 19 October 2018, three member student teams can access three modeling scenarios involving differential equations, posted at our SIMIODE website. They select one on which to work. These teams will work at their home institution, developing approaches and solutions to their chosen modeling scenario. The scenarios are designed so that every team may experience success in modeling, building their skills and confidence in differential equations. Each team will prepare a draft Executive Summary and 10 minute Presentation to bring to the regional host site on Challenge Saturday, 27 October 2018. Congratulations to the UC Merced SIAM Student Chapter for being selected to send a representative to the 2018 SIAM Annual Meeting (http://www.siam.org/meetings/an18/studentday.php) in Portland, Oregon, USA to present a research poster! Only 12 chapters (out of about 185) were invited to present posters!

Latinx in the Mathematical Sciences Conference 2018

About: On March 8-10, 2018, IPAM will host a conference showcasing the achievements of Latinx in the mathematical sciences. The goal of the conference is to encourage Latinx to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, to promote the advancement of Latinx currently in the discipline, to showcase research being conducted by Latinx at the forefront of their fields, and, finally, to build a community around shared academic interests. The conference is sponsored by the Mathematical Sciences Institutes Diversity Initiative and will be held on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, CA. Hello Bobcats! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I would like to let you all know that the UC Merced Society for Industrial & Applied Math (SIAM) Chapter will be organizing the Third Central Valley Regional SIAM Student Chapter Conference here in our campus. It will take place on Friday, April 27th 2018. Registration will be free and the event will include a keynote research talk by Prof. Matthias Heinkenschloss (Rice University) and a poster session featuring regional graduate and undergraduate research (in applied mathematics and related disciplines). Lunch and refreshments will be provided. The goal of this event is to bring together students and faculty sharing a common interest in applied mathematics and related fields. Participants will have the opportunity to network, share their research interests, and exchange ideas.
