Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and calls attention to efforts to remove or restrict books in libraries and schools.

In 2025, thousands of titles were challenged across the United States, with books representing LGBTQIA+ people and people of color continuing to be disproportionately targeted.

Libraries support the freedom to read, explore different perspectives, and make your own choices about what you read.

Explore the American Library Association’s **Most Challenged Books of 2025** and learn more about why these books have been targeted.

Thunderbirds, beginning Sept. 30, visit the Mesa Community College Library to commemorate Orange Shirt Day and learn more about the history and lasting impacts of Indian boarding schools through a special display.

While you're there, pick up a copy of Shards of Silence by Brian Lee Young and join our community book club. A limited number of copies will be available for checkout.

Read along in October, then join the book club discussion Nov. 5 from noon-1:30 p.m. Discussions available in-person and virtually.

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, not only a talented musician, but also a true titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library has received multiple Library of Congress Literacy Awards and, in 2018, Dolly visited us to donate the program’s 100 millionth book to our collection. She even hosted story time. 🦋❤️

🌸 April showers bring May flowers & we love April at MCC Library because we get to celebrate BOTH and 🤩 This year we kicked off the month when Kristina organized a lobby book display to celebrate Arizona poets. During Library Week we followed with an interactive lobby display from Alexia where students stopped to share a note about their favorite memories at MCC Library. A magnet poetry whiteboard activity on the second floor turned into a fun wordplay study break for our students this month (scroll right to see some of our favorites)

We’re excited to close Poetry month by showcasing MCC student excellence in a display, which features blackout poetry projects from MCC’s Spring semester Sociology 101 cohort. Students practiced poetic redaction of scholarly articles to creatively express their learning in the course. Their projects will be on display now through the end of this semester, so don’t miss your chance to come see it!
