Marie Yovanovitch didn’t just serve her country abroad — she warned us how to save our democracy at home.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch stood up to corruption, told the truth under oath, and paid a price for it. She’s seen what happens when democratic institutions are hollowed out and when strongmen try to bend the system to their will. And her message to us is simple:

We need to stand up for our values.
We need to defend our institutions.
We need to participate in civil society and support a free press.

Not every citizen can do everything.
But each of us can do one thing.

Every day, people like Marie — and ordinary Americans in every community — are reanimating the Constitution and the values it represents. They speak out, organize, vote, protect the rule of law, and refuse to look away. They keep going even when the odds feel stacked against them, even when wrongdoers seem to be rewarded, because it’s the right thing to do.

Happy Read Across America Week!
Today, we celebrate the power of reading—and the dedicated educators, librarians, and volunteers who help students discover its magic. Education has always been at the heart of the DAR’s mission. From supporting school libraries and donating classroom supplies to reading with students in local schools, members across the country generously give their time and talents to invest in the next generation of readers. These meaningful acts of service help spark a lifelong love of learning.
