During the 2020–2021 academic year, 44 members of the Barry Service Corps (BSC) provided 5,195 hours of service to more than a dozen community partner organizations. The BSC will be expanded and the civic leadership cohort strengthened next academic year. BSC membership is expected to increase by 50 percent, from just over 40 students in 2020–2021 to about 65 in 2021–2022.

CCSI (Center for Community Service Initiatives) has completed the implementation of its strategic plan for 2016–2021. A significant outcome of the plan is the inclusion of community-engaged scholarship explicitly in the university’s criteria for faculty promotion. During a challenging academic year in higher education, 40 Barry University students participated in Federal Work-Study Community Service. They supported the work of 10 community partners and the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI). The community partners are A New Start: Financial and Social Services, Amor en Acción, Branches, Breakthrough Miami, Easter Seals South Florida, Jewish Community Services of South Florida, Our Little Roses Foreign Mission Society, Peace Education Foundation, South Florida People of Color, and W. J. Bryan Elementary School.

Produce from the Barry Urban Garden is being donated to community fridges in various Miami area locations. The spring season has produced an abundance of tomatoes and a variety of vegetables, including celery and cucumbers. Pineapples and bananas are growing well and will soon be harvested.

One family from Honduras and another from Pakistan now feel fully resettled into their new home, thanks to the support of a Barry community partner assisted by a quartet of undergraduates. Church World Service South Florida coordinated the resettlement of the Honduran and Pakistani refugees. Assigned to the refugee resettlement agency, Nicole Ortiz, Rafaela Garcia, Matthieu Walker, and Constanza Veliz worked in pairs, tutoring family members. They used a tutoring guide developed by Dr. Jennie Ricketts-Duncan, an associate professor in Barry’s Adrian Dominican School of Education. The students also helped the resettling refugees navigate the school system, including the enrollment process, and obtain state-issued identification cards.
