Last weekend our SEPP students presented an applied workshop, "Did you see that? A workshop on using Nike strobe glasses with athletes," at the Southeast Regional AASP Conference in Statesboro, GA.

Thank you Georgia Southern University Sport and Exercise Psychology Graduate Program for organizing and hosting a great conference!

"You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” — Tom Brokaw

For two years we learned the inner workings of mental performance. One of us ran a full Ironman, a group climbed Camelback mountain at AASP 2017, some coached youth sport and fitness populations, we ran 5ks, and the brave and slightly crazy ones tackled their master's thesis. It could be believed that if it wasn't for practicing our own mental performance skills, we would be wondering how we all got through it. Class of 2018, we did it! We climbed our own mountains, ran our own races, laughed at our small struggles, and fist-bumped each other's successes. Our last performance was the walk across the graduation stage. Throw those caps and keep looking up! That's the only direction you're all going.

Congratulations class of 2018!

"We don't stop going to school when we graduate." - Carol Burnett

As as the semester is coming to a close, it is clear to see that papers, grades, and presentations don't make the program, but the people in it do. First and second years, it has been amazing to watch the progression and passions grow.

First years, take advantage of everything and prepare to create your own paths during your second year in the program. Second years, graduation is days away, but consider yourself a forever student in this field. Cheers to a great year!

From athletes to budding practitioners... this transition is a conversation worth having.

This last weekend BarryU students attended the Regional-AASP conference at Florida State University in order to present their panel regarding the process of transitioning from competing as athletes to performing as graduate students in their sport psychology programs. The panel conversation was effortless as the four former female international NCAA athletes shared laughs and stories of new experiences. Great job ladies!

“There are six people around the court and it's literally like a ballet. And fundamentals are at the core of everything you do."
- Caren Kemner

Last night, BarryU SEPP students (and Prof!) lit up the court with laughs and lessons of fundamentals. These players served into the net, over the net, around the net, and back into the battle grounds of their opponents. Competitiveness and great times is how these students made the game work. With their twists and turns, some may say they looked like ballerinas, but in the end, realizations of communication and collaboration made the night worthwhile.

"Tell me, how do you feel on the first day of your last semester?"

The feelings of nervousness, excitement, "not ready for this," "not what I expected," determined, and "it's about to get real," surfaced amongst the group of second-year students during one of their first classes back to campus.

With such diversity and truth to these responses, we all have the common feeling of accomplishment ahead of us. Class of 2018, you have sixteen weeks of experiences, memories, friendships, and planning with future colleagues. Sit tight, and let's see how you answer, "Tell me, how does it feel to be at graduation?"

"Just remember the five D's of dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and...Dodge." - Patches O'Houlihan

Following the great rules of Patches O'Houlihan, Barry University sport psychology students dodged, ducked, dipped, dove, and... attempted to dodge again, as the fury of other teams flew past them! Friday night's dodgeball tournament was an amazing test of guts, glory, and great laughs. Way to go SEPP Dodge Ballers!

As a program, we would like to congratulate, Belen Vela, one of our very own second-year master’s students, on her success at her first full Ironman in Arizona! With such a spirit for distance, competition, and positive attitude, it is not a surprise that she completed every mile to fullest.

Keep biking, swimming, and running your heart out Belen, we are so proud!
