Welcome to the Official page for the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.Established in 2001,our mission is to promote teaching, research, and outreach activities relating to the EU. The Miami-Florida Jean Monnet European Union Center of Excellence (MF-JMEUCE) , a consortium of Florida International University (FIU) and the University of Miami (UM), was established in the Fall of 2001 through a grant from the European Commission through its Delegation in Washington, DC. The Miami-Florida JM EU Center of Excellence , is a member of the Network of European Union Centers created in 1998 to build stronger ties among Europeans and Americans by examining the process of European integration and the implications thereof for the United States. Additionally, the Center cooperates with the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) to advance academic research in a number of fields concerning the EU. The Miami-Florida EUCE, is jointly administered through the School of International and Public Affairs – College of Arts & Sciences (FIU) and the Jean Monnet Chair (UM).

What an amazing semester it has been!
From celebrating 25 years of the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence to hosting 17 inspiring events, Spring 2026 brought together students, faculty, diplomats, and experts from around the world to explore the issues shaping Europe and the global community.

✨ Highlights included:
🇪🇺 Europe Day Celebration with European Consuls General and diplomats in Miami
🌱 The Jean Monnet EU Conference on Climate Justice
🏆 The Midwest Model EU, Schuman Challenge, and Euro Challenge competitions
🎙️ Distinguished lectures, expert panels, and high-level international visits
🤝 A new partnership through the signing of an MOU with the Center for the Study of Democracy

Our sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us in celebrating Day.
It was a fantastic and truly meaningful celebration as we also marked the 25th Anniversary of the Miami‑Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.
We were deeply honored by the participation of the European Consuls General — Hon. Lisette den Breems, Consul General Kingdom of the Netherlands, Hon. Sarah Kavanagh, Consul General of Ireland, Christofer Burger, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Hon. Michel Misto, Consul General of Italy — together with diplomats who joined us and shared thoughtful reflections on the values and meaning of .
Thank you for celebrating unity, peace, solidarity, and democracy, and for recognizing the remarkable accomplishments of our students. Celebrating Europe Day while commemorating our 25th anniversary made this occasion especially meaningful.

🔹 the European Council became an EU institution
🔹 a new key EU role was created: the President of the European Council

A Historic Day at FIU!
Last week, we had the incredible honor of welcoming H.E. Jovita Neliupšienė, Ambassador of the European Union in the United States , along with 14 European Ambassadors to the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence and the FIU Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University.
🇪🇺 This was the first-ever joint visit by the EU Ambassador and European Ambassadors to Florida — a truly historic moment for FIU and our community!
We’re so grateful for the powerful presentation and discussion on Transatlantic Partnership and EU-Florida Relations, covering key topics like foreign policy, defense, unity, and trade. Our students had the unique opportunity to engage directly with these distinguished diplomats.
🌍 Countries represented included: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Luxembourg, Estonia, Finland, France, and Portugal.
🙏 A heartfelt thanks to FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez for welcoming the delegation. Special thanks to Dr. Markus Thiel for moderating the distinguished panel; the Consuls General of Consulate of France in Miami; Ireland, Netherlands, and the Honorary Consul of Monaco for joining us.
👏 Huge appreciation to our amazing teams at SIPA and the FIU College of Law for making this event a success!
