Fred Shaw Poetry Contest this month!

40TH ANNUAL FRED SHAW POETRY PRIZE CONTEST

The Academy of American Poets is sponsoring the annual Fred Shaw Poetry Prize Contest for the 40th year. A poetry prize of $100 from this organization is to be awarded to a currently enrolled Spring 2012 (2011-2) Miami-Dade College student, supplemented by an additional $50 from the Georgianna Lindsley Endowment, making the Academy of American Poets Prize total $150. This award was established in memory of Fred Shaw, former Academic Dean of the Kendall Campus, and later Vice President for Development who died January 2, 1972. The Georgianna Lindsley Endowment will provide three additional prizes to be awarded college-wide. The Academy winner will not be eligible for the additional awards.

Procedures:
1. To be eligible a student must be enrolled at Miami-Dade College during the Spring 2012 (2011-2) term.
2. Publicity will be handled through the Office of Public Affairs. An attempt will be made to reach the total student body on all campuses through a variety of media, including student newspapers, radio announcements, announcements in class, posters, etc. For more information on the Contest please visit our website at www.mdc.edu/fredshaw.
3. The contest will begin on February 16, 2012.
4. Students may submit their best individual poems (no more than four [4] per student) no later than March 16, 2012.
5. The poems must be in English.
6. Students’ poems should be typed and should be IDENTIFIED (ON THE BACK OF EACH PAGE) BY THE STUDENT’S NAME, MDC ID., EMAIL ADDRESS, CAMPUS, HOME ADDRESS, AND TELEPHONE NUMBER. THE STUDENT’S NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION SHOULD NOT APPEAR ON THE FRONT OF THE POEM PAGE(S), ONLY ON THE BACK OF THE PAGE (S).
7. Students should be sure to proofread their poems for spelling and punctuation errors before submitting them. Each poem should have a title and, if more than one page, pages should be numbered. Poems may be submitted at the following locations depending on campus affiliation:
North Campus - English Department - Room 7322
Kendall Campus - English Department - Room 2217
Wolfson Campus - English Department - Room 3604
Homestead Campus - Arts and Sciences – Room B105
Inter-American Campus – Arts and Sciences – Room 1308/1371
Medical Center Campus - Student Life Office - Room 1150
Hialeah Campus - Arts and Sciences – Room 1415
West Campus – Arts and Sciences – Room 1236
8. After the deadline for submission, poems will be screened at the campus level, and the top six (6) from each of the campuses will be forwarded to the College-wide Coordinator for final screening and awarding of prizes. Faculty members will be chosen to administer the screening process at the campus level. Only one poem per student will be selected for final College-wide judging.
9. Arrangements will be made for a selection committee to meet and make the final selection of the winning poems. There will be no tie decisions. The committee will include representatives from the participating campuses and a presiding judge from the community.
10. The winners will be announced by April 29, 2012. Please visit our Contest website for official results: www.mdc.edu/fredshaw.
11. No individual participants will be contacted regarding the results of the Contest. Only the winners will be contacted individually via email. Participants should check with their Campus Coordinator for results of the Contest or visit the Contest website.
12. No copies of poems submitted to the Contest will be returned to the participants.
