Today in Chemistry - Per Teodor Cleve, a Swedish chemist credited with the discovery of holmium and thulium, was born in 1840. In 1874, Cleve also predicted that didymium was actually two elements - a theory proven right 11 years later when Welsbach discovered neodymium and praseodymium.

Today in Chemistry - Jacques Monod, a French biochemist who is regarded as one of the founders of molecular biology, was born in 1910. Monod would go on to share the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis."
