Born on January 28, 1853, José Martí was a poet, journalist, and revolutionary whose writings and activism shaped Cuba’s fight for independence. Across the Americas, statues of Martí honor his enduring legacy, including this monument by José Vilalta de Saavedra. Unveiled in 1905 in Havana’s Parque Central, the statue shows Martí in a moment of thoughtful reflection, pen in hand, representing his role as both an intellectual and a fighter for Cuban independence.
This 1980s photo, from the Bernard Diederich Collection and shared by FIU Special Collections and University Archives, goes beyond the monument itself by showing the daily life around it—an enduring reminder of Martí’s presence in Cuban identity and culture.

On January 21, 1933, The Hornet, Miami’s notorious weekly, hit the stands with headlines filled with scandal, drama, and the absurd. This tabloid thrived on attention-grabbing stories to sell copies, providing their readers with an early dose of sensationalism.
This issue, along with others from Miami’s print history, is preserved in FIU Special Collections and University Archives. Explore the archives and discover how much (or how little) has changed!

The January 10, 1974, issue of the FIU student newspaper "The Good Times" paints a picture of the school in its early days. Founding President Charles Perry was balancing the weight of building a brand-new university with a vision for its future. It’s a candid look at the challenges—and determination—that shaped FIU’s beginnings.
FIU’s student-run newspaper (in its various names over the years) has continued to document our campus community's energy, struggles, and optimism. As we mark the passing of Jimmy Carter and honor his legacy, we reflect on a pivotal moment from his post-presidency work. In October 1987, Carter visited Haiti with Belizean Prime Minister George Price to support efforts for the country’s first democratic elections after decades of authoritarian rule. His presence, representing The Carter Center, aimed to promote electoral fairness and highlight the world’s focus on Haiti’s democratic aspirations. His efforts remind us of the ongoing struggles and the resilience needed to achieve lasting change.
