Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad Immersive study abroad programs in 16 countries allow participants in the Schools Abroad to live the The Middlebury C.V.

Starr Schools Abroad have more than 50 years of experience in providing academically challenging immersion programs and operate programs in 37 cities and 17 countries. Students come from a wide range of academic fields and take courses in most disciplines, often alongside host-country students; intern or engage in volunteer work; and live with a family or local residents. At every juncture, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in the host culture and language.

Adriana writes: “Experiencing the World Cup in Brazil is something I will never forget. The entire country came together in such an incredible way, with so much pride and excitement.Even as someone who wasn’t Brazilian, I felt welcomed into that sense of community and found myself cheering just as passionately as everyone around me.

Brazilian flags popped up everywhere, and everything stopped whenever Brazil was playing.

Along with my friends, we decided to go watch a Avaí FC match which is Florianópolis’ team.

We had such an incredible time and the team won! I realized that in Brazil, futebol is a part of the country’s identity and a powerful way that people come together.”

Hi! My name is Stephanie Lu (‘27), and I am a Comparative Literature major at Midd! While I was studying abroad in Tokyo, we took a weekend getaway out from the city to a mountainous village in Chizu—all the way in Tottori Prefecture ⛰️ TW: Last video has live bugs

Many of us got to eat foods we’d never even thought of before (who knew “persimmon sushi” was actually made with cured fish and persimmon leaves 😲), and we even celebrated a local festival (hence why I’m getting eaten by a dragon 😂). What left the deepest impression on me was not just the natural scenery itself, but also the locals’ deep appreciation for nature 🍃 and all that we receive from it. During our tour of the village, we stopped randomly to pick chestnuts 🌰 and persimmons. We even helped out at their shiitake farm. Before our celebratory barbeque, we helped (mostly watched🫣) the locals pull out bee larvae for dinner, after which we were presented with locally hunted wild boar and bear meat to eat.

Cultural immersion does not stop at learning the language, it includes seeing and understanding how various people within the same culture live differently, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones, and experiencing the country outside of its cities. This is what our weekend trip to Chizu taught me! ❤️

Hi there! 👋 (It’s Olivia from Amherst.) Here’s a little bit about my life at Oxford and what I did there [last spring]:

One of my biggest commitments was playing for Oxford’s hockey team! I got to play my favorite sport abroad and meet a ton of really cool local students who showed me around the city and brought me to their different colleges.

My favorite memory being on the team was beating
Cambridge 4-0 in the Varsity match and having some students from the Middlebury program
come to watch!

I loved walking around the city and exploring different cafes and markets.

When the weather got a bit warmer, my friend and I joined local running groups where we did many of our runs in the Christ Church Meadow, which is beautiful in the spring.

Students who attend the Middlebury-CMRS program are associated with Keble College, and I also enjoyed exploring all the events Keble had to offer

like chapel services and formal dinners in the stunning dining hall.

As part of the program, students are also assigned to a seminar with people from their cohort. One fun memory I had was when my seminar on political philosophy had to get rescheduled to a Friday evening and our tutor brought us crisps and wine because of the time change.

While in Oxford, I ate tons of fish and chips, visited many pubs, learned so much, and met some really amazing people!

We ❤️ our host families! Fiona shares: “When people ask me about my study abroad experience with Middlebury, I quickly find myself talking about my incredible host family and how lucky I feel to have gotten placed with them!

Arriving in Buenos Aires a little nervous for all the upcoming change and unexpectedness of the semester, I instantly felt a part of the family— even joining them for a family friend’s birthday asado on the first night (followed by a lesson in home-making empanadas the next day)!

Living with a host family is a guaranteed opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the language-pledge and local culture.

I still count my lucky stars often for how thankful I am to have lived with my family

(And their 3 beautiful cats!)

From Chile, Alex writes: “Along with taking typical local university courses, I also interned this semester with Fondo de Solidaridad e Inversión Social (FOSIS), a branch of the Chilean government. Over the last few months I got to observe and aid in the improvement of social programs, namely “Ecomercados Solidarios,” an alimentary project in the Metropolitan Region.

The welcoming, more-than-dedicated Programa Familias team, and every office lunch spent together, made all the difference in my time there. Interacting with Santiago in this way, through service and study, allowed me to get to know the city on a much more holistic, interpersonal, and rewarding level.

Most of my weeks were spent with my colleagues visiting sites around the city to get to know the project and its key players in action, fieldwork which culminated in a written report and proposal to strengthen the project’s community-based ex*****on model.”

Congratulations to Felipe Valdes from Colby College for winning 2nd place in our spring photo contest with this photo from El Chaltén. Felipe spent the spring semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina (and the fall semester in Montevideo, Uruguay).

Felipe writes: “One kilometer from the summit of Fitz Roy, heavy snowfall left us at a crossroads: keep going or turn back. This picture, taken on the way back after falling just short of the Patagonia logo, was a perfect reminder that it’s not about the outcome, but being present and appreciating everything along the way.”

Congratulations to Kyr Brenden from Reed College for winning 3rd place in our spring photo contest. Kyr spent the spring semester in Oxford, UK.

Kyr reflects: “It was in the (sometimes) sunny rotunda of Oxford’s Radcliffe Camera that I spent dear hours with Benedicta Ward, R.W. Southern, the Gawain Poet, and many other friends. I hope to meet them back here one day!”
