Three Middlebury College faculty members have received Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards to teach and conduct research abroad during the 2026–27 academic year.

➡️ Obie Porteous, associate professor of economics, plans to teach and conduct research in Senegal focused on the potential economic impact of revenues from newly developed oil and natural gas reserves, particularly on the agricultural sector.

➡️ Rachael Joo, professor of American studies, will travel to Seoul to investigate the role of social media in reinforcing divisions during international sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup.

➡️ Matt Lawrence, Dahl Family Professor of Computational Social Sciences, will teach courses at Japanese universities focused on the American Dream as a lens for understanding American culture and society.

Scholars in sociology, economics, and American studies will teach and conduct research in Japan, South Korea, and Senegal during the 2026–2027 academic year.

This year’s Commencement luncheon has been moved indoors to the Proctor, Ross, and Atwater Dining Halls. We ask that graduates and guests have lunch in the dining hall closest to the graduate’s residence hall.

Please be mindful that seating will be very limited in dining halls. We encourage you, as you are able, to take your food to-go and enjoy your meal in one of the residence hall lounge spaces, or any of the following areas:

-Coltrane Lounge, Adirondack House
-Gifford Lecture Classroom, Gifford Hall
-The Grille, McCullough Student Center
-Wilson Hall, McCullough Student Center
-Ross 011 Classroom
-LaForce 121 Seminar Room
-Grand Salon, Le Chateau

The Commencement ceremony on the Central College Lawn will proceed as planned.

Due to tomorrow's weather forecast, we write to remind you of the alternate viewing locations for the Class of 2026 Commencement ceremony on May 24.

The three viewing areas offering livestream access are located at Wilson Hall, Dana Auditorium, and Middlebury Chapel.

In addition, the Commencement Luncheon following the ceremony has been moved indoors to the Proctor, Ross, and Atwater Dining Halls. We ask that graduates and guests have lunch in the dining hall closest to the graduate’s residence hall.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we celebrate the Class of 2026. Guests are encouraged to dress appropriately for wet weather and windy conditions.

Eleven Middlebury College students and recent graduates have received Fulbright Student Awards for the 2026–2027 academic year. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the highly selective fellowships support a year of international cultural exchange. The group includes eight English teaching assistantships and three study/research awards.

Middlebury honored excellence in public service at the 2026 Patrick J. Durkin, Class of 1979, Public Service Leadership Awards hosted by the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at Middlebury College. The May 4 ceremony at Wilson Hall recognized Middlebury students, alumni, educators, and community partners for their commitment to a wide variety of organizations.

The ceremony at Wilson Hall recognized outstanding leadership across a wide range of volunteer activities.
