FREE WHEN A FRIEND WANTS YOU TO LIE: BOUNDARIES POSTER

When a friend asks a child to lie, keep a dishonest secret or take the blame, it can feel really hard to know what to say. They may worry about losing the friendship or getting someone into trouble.

This simple one-page poster gives children and teens a calm way to pause, think and respond. It helps them spot when a request involves harm, cheating, stealing or sneaking around, and reminds them that supporting a friend does not mean carrying their risk.

It includes a clear sentence they can practise: “I can’t lie for you, but I can help you sort it.”

Useful for family chats, classrooms, PSHE lessons, mentoring, counselling and safeguarding conversations. A small prompt like this can help young people protect their peace, their reputation and their boundaries.

This was such an important lesson for me, and honestly one that I sometimes still struggle with. But it’s incredibly freeing to remember that I’m not my beliefs: It’s not ME that’s wrong, but the belief.

It’s true for others as well, so keep the focus on the belief, not the believer.

The word courage comes from the Latin word “Cor” - heart.
Courage is about having the heart to face what is difficult - to stay with what is difficult, to listen with an open heart, to mend what is broken.

A Courageous Citizen does not walk away from a wounded nation. We tend to its broken heart with our own hearts, with courage.
