Walt Chrynwski, a 1972 Penn State Harrisburg graduate, recently donated a panoramic photo montage that he created during the 1972 Harrisburg Rock Festival on campus to the Archives and Special Collections, Madlyn L. Hanes Library. Walt created the montage from four black and white photos he took at the festival.

“At that time, I was a senior on campus and a member of the photo club; likely I parlayed that into obtaining a ‘press’ pass and I lodged myself atop the scaffolding stage-right where the view of this image was taken,” Walt said.

The stage was in front of the Olmsted Building. The Educational Activities Building can be seen in the back right of the photo.

“What I remember about the festival was realizing the enormous crowd was the main event. My view from the stage scaffolding was special and I hoped the photos I took would do the scene justice when the prints were assembled together,” he said.

When he learned that the Archives and Special Collections had materials related to the rock festivals, he wanted to donate his piece.

Did you know? The Archives has a virtual exhibition online about that explores the rock festivals, which students organized each spring for most of the 1970s.

Penn State Harrisburg student Ellie Krebs took inspiration from her coursework and applied it on the path to victory as a campaign coordinator for a judicial candidate last November. She juggled her classes along with canvassing and events, and sometimes found herself the youngest in the room at political events.

“It was phenomenal and none of this would have happened if I didn't attend Penn State Harrisburg. Truly, it would not,” Krebs said. “It all has to do with this area, and the opportunities, and the way that my classes inspired me.”
