Summer might be in our rearview mirror, but we’re still celebrating our students studying abroad this summer!

Meet Gilman Scholar Mary Piper, a junior political science major who spent her summer studying in the U.K.! 🇬🇧 Between classes, museums and 18 theater shows, she even managed to take trips to Paris and Amsterdam.

“I’m more confident in myself and what I want to be now,” Piper said. “The lessons I learned in the U.K. will follow me through Georgia College, law school and my profession.”

Big congrats to biology major Josefa Tchamna Kouna — she just won a 2026 GEC Student Scholarship Award ($1,500!) for her Lake Sinclair water-quality research with GCSU’s Aquatic Sciences Center. A sweet treat on a Friday afternoon!

Maya Whipple (‘22, ‘25) visited with 20 freshmen and 31 senior art students today in Ennis Hall. Maya, who holds a bachelor’s of art in studio art from GCSU, is the owner of Zest Bake+Create in Gordon, Georgia.

We are always thrilled to welcome our alumni back to campus! Thank you, Maya, for taking the time to meet with our students!

This summer, junior biology major Rebecca DeRoth spent 10 weeks doing full-time cancer research at the University of Notre Dame through a competitive NSF REU program, studying a potential new treatment for prostate cancer.

Rebecca credits much of her success to her mentor, professor of biology Dr. Ellen France, who has helped 17 students from her lab land research spots at top universities nationwide.

“Having a mentor is really important,“ Rebecca said. “I am really grateful to have recieved so much support and guidance.”

This summer, senior history major Annie O’Neill, along with Jo Stephens, a senior who’s double majoring in interdisciplinary studies and philosophy, traveled to New Orleans for the Society of American Archivists (SAA) 90th Annual Meeting and Expo!

Both students received funding through the John E. Sallstrom Honors College Transformative Experience Grant to make the trip possible.

At the conference, they had a chance to see the archival profession in action by meeting working archivists, making valuable connections and seeing firsthand how classroom concepts translate into practical, real-world skills. A great look at the possibilities waiting for them after graduation!

There’s nothing quite like a room full of the people shaping our future! This past weekend, we welcomed the Georgia Art Education Association (GAEA) to our campus for their annual board meeting, and it was such an honor to host you all.

We deeply value the tireless work of K-12 educators across our state and remain committed to supporting them however we can. Thank you, GAEA, for allowing us to be part of your mission!
