Center for Sustainability - Millersville University The Center engages the MU community in the 3 pillars of sustainability (environmental preservation, social justice and economic vitality)

04/20/2017

Please join us tomorrow from 10-2 in the Student Memorial Center (SMC) Atrium for our Earth Day event, sponsored by the Sustainability Committee, the Center for Sustainability, and the Office of Sustainability.

You can visit a variety of displays and have a chance to win one of 5 state-of-the art solar chargers for mobile devices and sample free organic, fair trade chocolate.

This is a great chance to learn how to get involved in many sustainability programs on campus!

Please join us for free fair trade coffee and chocolate, a chance to win a mountain bike, a solar charger, and a pair of Inkkas handmade Peruvian shoes, and visit interesting exhibits on sustainability from the MU community and community partners! We will even have elementary students displaying their sustainable art installation. Rain or shine we will be in the SMC Atrium from 10-3. We also have 2 new interpretive signs to highlight the campus Rain Garden and the 'Ville-age Garden. Come see how MU supports the 3 pillars of sustainability!

Come out to the Earth Day event in the SMC Atrium from 10-3, and take a walk over to the new interpretive signs in the green space across from the bookstore. The signs were just installed today!

Things are happening in the 'Ville-age Garden! Here's a sneak peek at the new interpretive signs that will be installed tomorrow morning. Thank you to Signarama for the beautiful work on the signs, and thank you to ecoAmerica - the Center's new partner - for funding them! There will be more signs to come as the summer unfolds, but for now...a sign at the Rain Garden and the 'Ville-age Garden.

SPSEA members Blair Welsh, Michael McMillan, Danni Elliot, Mark Fiorentino, Sarah Moyer, and Sarah Arney joined Dr. Nadine Garner and Dr. Jason Baker in the 'Ville-age Garden this afternoon for a spring cleanup and seed sowing. Thank you - you did a wonderful job and the garden looks ready for spring!

Thank you to the fabulous members of SPSEA who came out to the 'Ville-age Garden today to w**d, till, and plant the first spring planting in time for Earth Day!

Day of Caring 2015: at the end of a long and rainy morning, the volunteers were wet and little bedraggled, but the garden looks great, and we are closer than we have ever been!

10/01/2015

Thank you, Day of Caring student volunteers, and to Dr. Lynn Marquez for keeping everyone in good spirits as the rain began to fall...and fall...

A good omen for the garden to come...

Dr. Victor DeSantis and Dr. Vilas Prabhu visit the garden before the students arrive on the Day of Caring. It is a startlingly huge garden!

Introducing the new MU/Wheatland MS Partnership Garden: a half-acre beautifully fenced in, and another half acre of open space. First-year student volunteers for the Day of Caring 2015 came to w**d the garden and prep it for the winter. The fence was installed in the spring and we spent the summer managing the groundhog holes, growing tall w**ds, and planning the space. We're in good shape now, and we'll have a ribbon-cutting to launch the garden next spring!

This is how the new, gigantic school garden across from Wheatland MS began: in the spring of 2014 I presented my vision for a big, dedicated school garden to Dr. Jay Butterfield, then the principal of Wheatland MS (and currently the Director of Secondary Education in the SDoL). Dr. Butterfield had faith in the program and shared my vision, and within minutes he drafted a letter of support for a very generous amount of grant funding and an acre of land. It made my year; and I am clearly the happiest person in the photo to see Dr. Butterfield!
