Kinley, one of our GAs, did a fantastic job presenting her longitudinal research on student counselors-in-training having less to juggle internally when they feel confident in their skills thus able to be attentive and connect even better with their clients. Great work, Kinley!

Join us in late-April for a webinar about sandtray therapy!

Date:
Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at 2:00PM EDT

Title:
Sandtray Therapy Foundations and Skills for the Professional Counselor

Presenter:
Dr. Julia Whisenhunt

Description:
Sandtray therapy is an expressive and developmentally responsive counseling modality that can be used across a variety of client/student populations and treatment issues. A growing body of research supports its effectiveness in supporting self-esteem in adolescents (Shen & Armstrong, 2008), reducing internalizing and externalizing behaviors in preadolescents (Flahive & Ray, 2007), and supporting adults who have a trauma history (Schoonover et al., 2025). Due to its nonthreatening and engaging qualities, sandtray therapy can be particularly useful in overcoming therapeutic resistance and supporting individuals who have difficulty with verbal expression (Homeyer & Sweeney, 2023).

Friends, please consider advocating on behalf of the counseling profession. There’s already a shortage of counselors and anxiety, depression, and addictions are only increasing.

We are very proud of our School Counselors and how they serve their students, families, and communities!

Another example of class not feeling like class! First night back was a winter welcome back dinner! Lots of good chatter between and among cohorts! Food was just a bonus, but it was delicious! Hats off to Pioneer catering!

Wish every class could be like this!

We are so proud of you, Gracie!

Meet our Educator of the Week!

Name: Gracie Jones

Grade/Subject: School Counselor

What do you like most about working at Sulphur Springs?

I enjoy so many things about Sulphur Springs, but our school community is truly my favorite part. You walk in the halls and immediately feel loved and supported. And our students are at the heart of that!

What inspired you to become a counselor?

I became a School Counselor to be an advocate for students. I had so many influential teachers in Washington County who shaped my own life, and they inspired me to pour into others the same way they poured into me. I love watching my students grow in all areas. Being able to walk alongside them, celebrate their wins, and support them through challenges is why I love being a School Counselor!

What is a fun fact or a hobby you enjoy?

My new favorite hobby is collecting house plants and trying to keep them alive!

This moment makes it worth it! Future and present counselors! (Missed a few who couldn’t attend.)
