From the Desk of the First Gentleman
Two weeks ago, we had the privilege of welcoming a group of 10 students into our homeâan experience that felt like Mount Mary at its very best.
The group reflected a beautiful diversity of backgrounds, ages, and academic paths, yet what stood out most was the shared spirit they carried. There was a genuine culture of respect, affirmation, and care for one anotherâsomething deeply rooted and truly special. One student described campus as a âbubbleâ where they are able to grow and belong for four years. Hearing that gave me pause. That was not my own college experience, which felt far more competitive than collaborative. What Mount Mary offers is a rare and meaningful gift.
What was especially moving was how students spoke about faculty and staff. They shared stories of being at low points and how a simple conversationâwith someone who chose to listenâhelped lift them up. It reminded me of my own experience as a student in an SSND school. I recall a difficult day that ended in the principalâs office, expecting discipline, but instead receiving compassion, understanding, and even a bit of laughter. I left not with punishment, but with dignity. That moment has stayed with me.
As these students reflected on how much they will miss this community after graduation, I found myself thinking about legacy. The accolades and achievements we often focus on may fade with time, but the moments where we choose empathy, presence, and careâthose are what endure. The messages I occasionally receive from former students confirm this truth.
It was clear that evening that the spirit of Mount Maryâthe compassion, the connection, the commitment to lifting one another upâlives on well beyond campus. It is carried forward in the hearts and lives of our students and graduates.
