Happy Earth Day!🌎💚
These photos from the AGSL's Harrison Foreman Collection show the first annual Earth Day celebration held in New York City on April 22, 1970. Throughout the day, an estimated 100,000 people flooded the shut-down streets of Manhattan to stop at booths hosted by local and national environmental and social justice groups and listen to speakers such as NYC mayor John Lindsay, actor Paul Newman, and writer Kurt Vonnegut.
Since its inception 56 years ago, Earth Day continues to serve as a day of action in the fight for environmental justice- go to earthday.org to learn more and see what events are taking place near you!

Happy 414 Day, UWM Community and beyond!

Yesterday, you saw two atlases in our collection that were in need of repair. Today we feature the same two atlases after restoration work. Why is this work important? More people will be able to use these materials for years to come.

We are also lucky enough to have a match challenge thanks to Mary and John Emory, who will contribute $1,000 to the American Geographical Society Library Fund when 20 donors give to this fund. We invite you to join us as we celebrate today, April 14, 2026. We'd love your support for preservation efforts in the AGSL, which would make a difference to many people for years to come.

To give to the American Geographical Society Library Fund, click the link https://give.uwmfoundation.org/414-for-uwm-giving-days-2026 , and choose the first option under Challenges & Matches to select “American Geographical Society Library Fund.” After that, just fill out your information and choose your payment option. Today and tomorrow are 414 for UWM Day Giving Days!

Pounce has been getting into atlases lately! An atlas is a book with maps. What does atlas restoration mean? The process can be very involved or just minor touch-ups. Atlas restoration is like book restoration – sometimes you need to replace the covers and sometimes there needs to be paper restoration done. It can often include resewing pages. Check out today’s images to see the sorry state of two atlases in our collection and come back tomorrow to see what these same atlases look like after restoration treatment.

We are also lucky enough to have a match challenge thanks to Mary and John Emory, who will contribute $1,000 to the American Geographical Society Library Fund when 20 donors give to this fund. We invite you to join us as we celebrate today and tomorrow, April 13 and 14, 2026. We'd love your support for preservation efforts in the AGSL, which would make a difference to many people for years to come.
