We're to share that a $1M investment has been made in the Leadership Lab by The Toro Company (TTC), strengthening our experiential learning, community-based projects, and the development of values-driven business leaders.

Rick Olson, '10 MBA and CEO of The Toro Company, and other TTC leaders recently toured Marilyn C. Nelson Hall to celebrate the investment.

"By helping develop career-ready graduates and supporting the next generation of leaders and innovators, we're building a stronger future for Minnesota's industries, employers and communities," says Olson.

The Leadership Lab is an innovative co-curricular program combining academic coursework with a 75- to 100-hour experiential learning project supporting a local nonprofit. Since its launch in Spring 2021, the Lab has successfully executed 22 high-impact community projects with more than 13 mission-driven nonprofit organizations. With the Lab's applicant pool having grown 25% year-over-year, TTC's gift will increase student access and enhance its programming.

The program is managed by Lab Director Sarah Wojnicki Smith and Faculty Director Professor Theresa Glomb, who holds The Toro Company-David Lilly Chair in Organizational Behavior. Professor Glomb, a renowned expert on worker well-being, maintains a deep, decade-long relationship with TTC’s executive leadership, global human resources, and business unit teams.

We're beyond grateful to the 55 benefactors of the $40M Connecting Carlson renovation, who understand that empowering the business leaders of tomorrow requires a building that meets the business needs of today. Without these alumni and friends of the school, this fully donor-funded, 70,000-square-foot transformation wouldn't have been possible.

"[Looking around the building], think of all these names, all these signatures, as endorsements of the University of Minnesota and of Minnesota Carlson," Marilyn Carlson Nelson remarked. "This gives me hope — this is worth signing my name to. It is my love note to the future."

Last Friday, the official reopening was held for the newly named Marilyn C. Nelson Hall, marking the official conclusion of the Connecting Carlson building project.

"The University of Minnesota is the engine for Minnesota’s workforce and beyond, thanks to the support and partnership of the people in this room," said President Rebecca Cunningham. "Thank you for helping us build a space that brings our community together to create and innovate for Minnesota’s future."

of Tori McKinney, '28 BSB (right), for winning a gold medal and the MVP award during the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup! 🥇🏆🏀

In the final, the Americans took down No. 18 Canada. The gold medal match was a defensive battle that ended 15-10 in favor of the U.S. An early two-point shot from McKinney put the Americans up 4-1, but Canada answered back, holding a 9-7 lead after a made free throw. With the gold medal in the balance, the U.S. closed on a 6-1 surge. McKinney tallied a game-high six points and six rebounds.

"You’re playing against the best of the best in a very different type of game — three-on-three is very different than five-on-five," commented Dawn Plitzuweit, head coach of . “[Tori] played incredibly hard, played incredibly well, obviously, and was the MVP on top of all of it."

With Team USA traveling from Chile to Canada throughout their journey, Tori was grateful to be part of the experience.

“I would say the whole process was honestly amazing. Being able to travel to a new country, meet new people — it was just incredible,” Tori said. “And then obviously we won, so that was like the cherry on top of the cake.”

Over 1,500 students attended our fall Carlson Career & Internship Fair last Friday!

Thank you to the 500 recruiters and almost 150 employers who were part of this amazing event. Your involvement allowed every student who came to potentially meet a future employer and progress in their professional journey. Some organizations are already on-campus today, interviewing the same students they met in Mariucci on Friday!

Shout-out to the Carlson Business Career Center for doing a stellar job arranging on behalf of our current and recent students.

One last time, we have to mention how we are of our community for making the Connecting Carlson building project possible. Through generous philanthropy from alumni and friends of the school, this $40M renovation was done without any expense to students, even while focusing on benefiting the student experience:

• Common space in the building increased by 166%, and 30 new breakout and study spaces were upgraded or created, all for enhanced gathering and networking.

• The new switchback staircase finally offers a continuous conduit between the lower, first, and second levels of the building, so students can more easily move between floors.

• The Hasse Atrium's new second-level walkway allows for easier travel, and infilling its opening in the first floor has expanded the capacity for future events held in the heart of the building.

• The retractable wall and tiered seating in Whaley Auditorium create more opportunities for collaboration for students during lectures and events.

• The Glaser Learning Suite, Zaheer Learning Lab, and Bjornnes Family Suite now (respectively) house the four Carlson Enterprises (Brand, Consulting, Funds, Ventures), the Carlson Analytics Lab, and the Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship — all of which play some part in students' experiential learning!

The construction may have finished, but its impact will improve students' experiences at Minnesota Carlson for years to come — and for that, we're beyond grateful. 💛
