Lucia Inkley-Pacheco ’25, MA in Sustainable Design

💡 “The program equips us to understand and intentionally shape our own paths within sustainability. Rather than giving us a single definition of what a 'sustainable designer' should be, the program offers the tools: systems thinking, critical inquiry, community engagement, and material literacy, to start building our own roadmap...It’s been inspiring to see how each person in the cohort interprets that journey differently."

“Being in a healthy environment for critique definitely decreased any insecurities I had with my art at the start of the program.”

MCAD’s Pre-College Summer Session (PCSS) is an inspiring and challenging two and a half week, 3-credit, studio art and design program. It’s open to high school students who have completed their sophomore, junior, or senior year.

Conversation with the Creators of Laila Starr
Visiting Artist Panel

When humanity nears the discovery of immortality, the goddess of Death is cast down to Earth to live as a mortal named Laila Starr. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr (BOOM! Studios) is a funny, heartbreaking meditation on life and loss, and this fall Minnesota Opera brings it to the stage as a world premiere opera.

Before the curtain rises, join writer Ram V and artist Filipe Andrade for a special conversation, only at MCAD and presented in partnership with Minnesota Opera. Moderated by Ryan Taylor, Minnesota Opera's President and General Director, it's the story behind the pages, followed by a live Q&A.

“Artists do need alone time to develop things, but you also need a support structure,” she says. “Particularly if you are an artist that is doing a medium that is a little out of the norm, or you are a woman or a person of color, or you are q***r, or if you are somewhat of an outsider for whatever reason, community lets you keep going. It is how you become the artist you want to be, and sometimes the human being you are afraid to be on your own.”

Kenichiro Imaizumi ‘25
Imaizumi says the art school education honed skills that he has used in the gaming industry ever since. “MCAD placed great emphasis on process—how ideas are formed, how decisions are made, and how workflows are constructed,” he says. “This approach directly translates to game development today. Game production involves teams of hundreds of people. To guide such teams, it is essential to clearly communicate the concept and vision, and to give precise direction to avoid unnecessary work. That requires not only stating goals, but also explaining the thought process, workflows, and overall creation process. The advice and mindset I learned from MCAD professors have been extremely valuable in my work as a producer.”

While she admits she is still finding her way as a working artist, she does have a few tips to share with new MCAD graduates. “Always create art. Like no matter what. If you are broke, make work with what you have,” says Martinez, who has used everything from bricks to pantyhose in her own work. “Document your work, even if you think it is not perfect. Learn how to write grants; it’s a really good skill to have. And be open to moving. My home will always be in the Midwest, but it’s good to be out in the real world. Any place can become your community.”
