Hello everyone! Welcome to Spring Semester of 2023. We hope that your year has gotten off to a good start, and we wish you the best of luck with your classes this semester.

If you don’t know who we are, we are your Student Senate. We are the officially recognized voice of the student body on campus. We help with club funding, raising awareness of current issues, and advocating for the student body. This Thursday (1/19), we'll be holding elections to fill open positions for Spring Semester. Up for election are the positions of Director of Communications and IT, Director of Events and Outreach, Senator of Legislative Affairs, Senator of Health and Sustainability, and Senator of Diversity. If you're interested in any of these positions or would like to learn, please stop by the Student Senate office or the Student Life desk on the second floor of the Helland Center to learn more!

We hold general assemblies every other Thursday from 3-4PM in the Helland Center, which we encourage all students to attend to help make your voices heard. There are no classes scheduled for that time specifically so that students are able to attend these meetings if they wish. Please join us this Thursday to cast your vote for your student representatives. The schedule for this semester is as follows:

Student Senate Candidate: Senator of Diversity
Felicia 'FoFo' Bristol
She/Her

Personal Bio:

I am currently Senator of Diversity for our student body, I also am in the works of creating an "I AM" club here on campus. I enjoy learning and understanding "Different" in general may it be personality, values, beliefs or culture. I would love to bring more diverse events to our school. I have not been able to serve the way I desire in my present seat due to many reasons, major one the virus which is keeping us at home. I personally am hoping and assuming each one of you are well, healthy and safe in the reading of this. So, what that being stated I would love to have an opportunity to try again, through your personal vote. I am very interested in knowing, understanding and voicing what it is majority of Diversity needs here at Minneapolis College in order for you and I to be successful in our schooling along with sharing resources and connections to different things on campus or the community. As I have gained a stronger sense of my duties for each student here on campus.

In this term I will be able to take time to review policies, changes and bring forth new ideas where we as one feel there needs change in order to operate as one student body. I can be sure everyone will time to get to know me and my background. As I come from a mass diverse background it would be my pleasure to engage with as many students. I am laid back, I enjoy laughing and my moto would be: Do more, Say Less. Fear is only a pathway to Greater tasks and personal risk with an outcome of long term benefits. I love to encourage, strengthen, structure, and support all walks of Diversity no matter the races, disability, s*x or gender one identifies. I want to influence each person positively in the growth of their learning and living structure. I want the campus to be secure as you are one of most important pieces here at Minneapolis College. I strive to encourage confidence in each one of you to step out of your comfort zone to help each other and strengthen your skills between one another.

I currently am attending school for my Bachelor's in Fashion Apparel, also want to work in Government after my clothing line is stable. I have a 15 year old who attends Henry High School, all I can say is she is wonderful. She inspires me as she says " Being Great is Doing your best in all you do." I have 7 brothers and 2 sisters, will be married soon. I am here to make things little better for all of us in the end, so please approach or ask me anything know that I am thinking you when speaking for all of us, first and foremost. The more encouraged I am the harder I work and the future I will be in Life. If I can be that drive for you, would be my pleasure.

Thank you, Felicia "FoFo" Bristol.

What are some goals that you have to bring awareness to on Student Senate?

More engagements and support from members that attend GA meetings, find avenues to better support new Senate members, review processes in bylaws and policies so they are attainable and reasonable for poverty students so we all can engage, feel equal and confidence within. Break barriers that may harbor any knowledge from a student when it comes to connecting students to resources, support or one other without facing judgement of any kind.

What initiatives are important to you to address while on Student Senate?

To make sure student voices are recognized, not just heard. Support the shy or soft-spoken students along with all Diversity as well as speak for in any other meeting beside GA meetings. Advocate and communicate for Diversity to the Director of Advocacy. Not to let Diversity concerns to be sweep under the rug due to the meeting is close to the end, when we feel hurried or not clearly understood, a urgency to vote or something simple as another person over talking or shifting the topic in any way to avoid dealing with Diversity on the campus.

Student Senate Candidate: Director of Finance

Mariah Cannon- They/Them/Theirs

Hello Everyone,

My name is Mariah Cannon and I am pursing a Business Management Associates Degree of Applied Science here at Minneapolis College. I mainly organize to secure vital resources which includes food, housing, finances that support the livelihood of marginalized and student communities. Thus, my priority as the Director of Finance is to ensure fiscal decisions that impact programming and resource allocation represent the needs and voices of students.

Currently, I am the sitting President of Students Against Homelessness & Hunger (SAHH) as a strong advocate of food security for students. My advocacy centers on accessing the Student Life Budget Committee (SLBC) to secure funding to further supplement Amy’s Depot with pantry items as a source of food security on campus. The approval of funds from the SLBC coupled with donations from Give To The Max allowed for the SAHH at minimum to raise $24,000 in food security funds. Moreover, I co-authored the Food Security Act as a fiscal policy that sustains funding for the various elements that stimulate food security on campus alongside a coalition to lead out its contents. As the Director of Finance, I would ensure the Food Security Act is properly carried out and funds are distributed to initiatives on campus that provide food resources to students.

Further, I am a member and prior student worker in the African American Education Empowerment Program (AME) that supports black and brown students in academic excellence and our overall lives as students at Minneapolis College. As a student worker in the AME Program I had the great fortunate to collaborate with the Sisters of Diaspora (SoD) to host the Women’s Leadership Fair. I upheld my mission to recirculate funds into women/black-owned business that represent our communities and experiences by working with West Indies Soul Food to cater the Fair. Moreover, SoD secured Lissa Jones, a prominent black women leader in Minneapolis to speak at the Women Leadership Fair which had a successful turnout. The support of leadership in AME alongside student participation allowed for us to prioritize vendor/supplier diversity which is integral to the current goals of equity and inclusion at Minnesota State colleges. My role as the Director of Finance would grow our capacity to collaborate with a variety of local businesses to ensure we are also supporting their vitality and success in our communities.

I am also an Urban Scholar at the City of Minneapolis in the Division of Race & Equity with a focus on the Trans Equity. In the internship, I helped to coordinate the Stonewall Oral History Project which centers black, indigenous, and people of color trans/gender nonconforming experiences and vision for an equitable future in Minneapolis. It is my value to center the voices of BIPOC trans/GNC and various marginalized communities when organizing economies to ensure policies are in fact providing equitable resources that support our well-being. Therefore, I intend to actively listen and collaborate with students as the Director of Finance to ensure our experiences are centered in a manner that achieves equitable resources and outcomes.

Lastly, I am an intern at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) currently assisting with the hiring process for the 2020-2021 School Leadership positions. The experience of following and innovating adequate systems that support a hiring process allows for my adaptability to administrative level work. Whether it is tracking candidates progress or screening applications for the next set of Urban Scholars at MPS, such skills are transferable to the expectations within the Director of Finance position. It is my goal to effectively maintain the administrative work and diligent review of proposals from students in the Student Life Budget Committee.

Thank you for the opportunity to run for the Director of Finance and I am prepared to take on the responsibilities to meaningfully serve students at Minneapolis College.
