Congratulations to CEMS Professor Bharat Jalan on being elected Secretary/Treasurer of the American Physical Society's Division of Materials Physics. He will take office in March 2026.

Jalan has been an active member of APS for many years and currently serves as an elected DMP Member-at-Large. In his new role, Jalan will help guide the division’s financial stewardship, programming, and long-term vision.

Through a flexible, on-demand format with video lectures and live Zoom office hours, the course introduces coating engineers, scientists, and researchers to the principles of liquid-applied coating processes and solidification phenomena. In a major step toward next-generation electronics, researchers at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, led by CEMS Professor Bharat Jalan and Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Tony Low, have discovered a way to manipulate the direction of charge flow in ultrathin metallic films at room temperature using light. This discovery opens the door to more energy-efficient optical sensors, detectors, and quantum information devices.

We are deeply saddened to share the tragic passing of Shubh Modi, a 2022 CEMS graduate. Shubh and his sister, Shagun Modi, were among the 241 lives lost in the crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025.

His loss is deeply felt by the CEMS community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
