The International Institute for BioSensing (IIB), in partnership with the Minnesota Nano Center (MNC) and IEEE TryEngineering , successfully hosted the 2026 Educator Workshop, bringing K–12 educators together for immersive professional development in emerging technologies.

The workshop introduced teachers to the fundamentals of sensors, nanofabrication, and artificial intelligence through hands-on activities, laboratory experiences, and classroom-ready resources.

By combining IIB's expertise in biosensing and AI-enabled technologies with MNC's state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities and IEEE Tryengineering's global STEM education network, the program empowered educators to integrate cutting-edge engineering concepts into their classrooms.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building Minnesota's future STEM workforce by increasing awareness of sensing technologies, semiconductor manufacturing, and AI while equipping teachers to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

The International Institute for Biosensing (IIB) was thrilled to host nearly 60 bright high school students on UMN’s East Bank campus for the Future Health Innovators summer workshop! Arriving from the Power of People Learning Institute’s Girls Taking Action program, the Minnesota STEM Partnership, and local schools, these young scientists spent the week transitioning from classroom learners into active inventors.

In its Precision Sensing Lecture Series, International Institute for Biosensing (IIB) is proud to host Prof. Ville Pimenoff. Prof. Vimenoff is an adj. Professor in Oulu University, Finland and a visiting researcher in Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. He also has a research affiliate at Aqsens Health Ltd. He is working in close collaboration with Research Unit of Population Health and Biobank Borealis, Faculty of Medicine, Oulu University, Finland as well as Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology - CLINTECH, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and Snyder Lab - Stanford University, US.

The energy, curiosity, and thoughtful questions from these young learners were truly inspiring. Moments like this remind us how important it is to introduce the next generation to the science and technology that power the modern world.

A Year in Review at IIB

This past year was filled with momentum, collaboration, and impact at the International Institute for Biosensing (IIB).

From inspiring lectures and impactful workshops on leadership and emerging technologies, to launching our STEM and K–12 initiatives, celebrating NanoDay, and strengthening national, international, and industry partnerships—we’ve been building together across disciplines. Biosensing sits at the intersection of science, technology, and real-world applications, and we’re excited to keep expanding this community in the year ahead.
