Where can a UM CHSS education take you?

What if understanding history could help you shape what comes next?

At the University of Montana, African American Studies invites students to explore history, culture, identity, politics, social movements, and the experiences of the African Diaspora, all while connecting those perspectives to the world we live in today.

And here is something you might not know: UM is home to the third-oldest African-American Studies program in the country. 😍

The program is interdisciplinary, drawing from fields like history, political science, sociology, anthropology, English, economics, geography, and music. Students can also put their learning into action through research, internships, community service, organizing, and hands-on projects.

What exactly is CHSS? 💙

The University of Montana’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences brings together 15 departments and programs spanning the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies.

From psychology and economics to philosophy, English, world languages and political science, our students explore the people, ideas, cultures and systems that shape our world.

CHSS also includes interdisciplinary programs such as Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies (WGGS), Native American Studies (NAS), African-American Studies (AAST) and Digital Media Studies (DMST) — creating opportunities to explore complex questions from multiple perspectives.

And here in Montana, place matters. Native American Studies offers a particularly meaningful opportunity to learn about Indigenous peoples, histories, cultures and contemporary experiences in the region we call home. 🏔️

Across all of these disciplines and programs, one thing connects us: a commitment to curiosity, critical thinking, meaningful questions and understanding the world around us.
