We are excited to announce another stellar addition to the UMPT faculty! Dr. Ryan Marker completed his DPT degree and PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Along with his research and expertise in clinical exercise interventions, he has experience directing clinical exercise programs, having recently served as the Program Director of the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program at the University of Colorado. He has previously taught neuroscience, exercise science, and evidence-based practice. Please give Dr. Marker a friendly Chewbacca-esque welcome!

We've had exciting new changes take place this past year in our clinical education faculty and program. UMPT has named a new Director of Clinical Education, Dr. Jaclyn Carson, and Associate Director of Education, Dr. Maria Iles, who are thrilled to mentor and propel the next generation of physical therapists. UMPT has a rigorous, diverse, and student-centered clinical education program that Dr. Carson and Dr. Iles are prepared to advance and grow in response to the evolving clinical landscape and the needs of the next generation of physical therapists.

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Bria Riggs, PT, DPT, on her completion of UMPT's Orthopedic Residency Program. Throughout this past year, Dr. Riggs has brought so much joy to the clinic and shown dedication, passion, and a strong desire to learn. She has accepted a position as a Physical Therapist and On-Site Clinical Preceptor with UMPT Clinic.

Of her residency, Dr. Riggs said the following: My favorite part of Residency was the mix of work I had - working with students in the classroom and clinic, patient care, and research - and the amazing people I’ve interacted with. Each aspect of the program undoubtedly made me a stronger Physical Therapist! The people I have met along the way, whether they be patients, students, faculty, staff, or community members, are what have made this journey so rewarding and worthwhile! Go Griz!

Dear UMPT & Friends,

It is with humility and excitement that I step into the role of Chair and Program Director for the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.

My connection to UMPT started on a snowy January day in 2007, when I visited campus as a prospective PT school applicant. It was one of those classic Missoula winter days where a hike up Mt. Sentinel brings you out of the fog and into the sunshine, looking over a blanket of clouds reminiscent of the ancient glacial lake! Although life took me to Colorado for my PT and PhD training, that visit stuck with me. When a faculty position opened up here in 2019, I jumped at the opportunity.

Missoula is magical, but the people sold me on UM. Great people, doing great work, for the right reasons. To our faculty, staff, students, and alumni: I learn from you every day, and I will do my best to support you in this new role. To my colleagues across the College of Health and University: thank you for making this such a uniquely inspiring place.

UMPT has a proud history spanning nearly half a century. Since 1978—built on the legacy of Nora Staael Evert—we have grown into a dynamic DPT program with an innovative and applied curriculum, a vibrant clinical operation that supports our School and our community, and an impressive research footprint, all while staying true to our roots of serving Montana.

I am excited for the next part of our journey! On any worthwhile trail there are challenges, switchbacks, and new summits to approach; but the best part is the people you walk it with.

We would like to extend our sincere congratulations and thanks to Dr. Sue Ostertag and Dr. Ryan Mizner for their dedication to UMPT as Co-Chairs. UMPT has been left a better institution because of their leadership!

We will greatly miss Dr. Ostertag as she has retired from academia after 20 years at UMPT. Dr. Mizner will return to his full-time faculty and research position and is thrilled to welcome the Class of 2029 in August.

Thank you greatly, Dr. Mizner and Dr. Ostertag!
