“We Over Me”: Team Culture Driving Greyhounds’ Early Success
The wins are piling up for the MACC Greyhounds this season, but ask Head Coach Chris Fletcher what’s behind the 13-4 start and 10-game winning streak, and he won’t begin with statistics.
He’ll begin with culture.
“I think the best compliment we get when we’re playing opponents is they don’t talk about the talent out there,” Fletcher said. “They usually say, ‘Man, your guys are really tough and pull together. It looks like you’ve got really strong leadership.’”
That leadership starts with a core of returning sophomores who understand the program’s expectations — and live them daily.
“It’s the returning guys and what their leadership brings,” Fletcher said. “That’s what’s holding this thing together.”
Fletcher describes a team that genuinely enjoys being around each other — long before first pitch.
“Nothing we do is fabricated,” he said. “These guys genuinely want to be around each other. If you go down to the cafeteria, you’ll see 20 guys sitting together eating lunch. They’re going to other sporting events together. They just love being around each other.”
That unity shows up in the dugout.
“They’re really interested in the game. They’re really pulling for each other,” Fletcher said. “Whether we’re down eight runs and making a comeback or we’re up eight runs, they’re the exact same.”
The atmosphere at home games has reflected that energy. Crowds have packed the stands, and fans line the outfield fence — some watching from pickup trucks beyond left field.
“It’s just a really good environment for our guys to play in front of,” Fletcher said. “They love playing at home with that.”
While standout performances have certainly contributed to the team’s strong start, Fletcher keeps the emphasis on collective effort.
“We’re all about the ‘we,’” he said. “It’s not one guy or one person leading this thing. It’s a really good collective group that loves to play baseball and keeps showing up doing their thing.”
As the season stretches on, Fletcher’s message remains simple.
“We just ask these guys to show up every day and give us their best,” he said. “If they keep showing up for each other, the rest will take care of itself.”
For the Greyhounds, the formula is clear: play hard, stay together — and let the results follow.
