Dr. S-T is a cognitive neuroscientist and academic leader whose career has been defined by a sustained commitment to advancing research, education, and public engagement in the psychological sciences. Trained at the City University of New York Graduate Center, his work has focused on the neural foundations of language, reading, and cognitive function, with additional contributions spanning developmental disorders and cognitive health. Over the course of his career, he has secured significant federal funding, published widely, and mentored students across all levels of training. At the University of South Alabama, he served as Department Chair and played a central role in strengthening doctoral training, supporting clinical excellence, and promoting undergraduate research. He has also contributed to the broader scientific community through leadership roles in the Alabama Academy of Science and national honors education initiatives.
In 2026, Dr. S-T was inducted as a Fellow of the Alabama Academy of Science (FAAS), and received the Wright Gardner Award for Lifetime Achievement in Science.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Dr. S-T will be leaving USA's BBS program to serve as Department Chair of the Department of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of North Florida. In this new role, he plans to build on his record of program development and student-centered leadership by expanding research opportunities, strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations, and enhancing pathways from undergraduate education to graduate and professional careers. He is particularly committed to increasing student access to hands-on research experiences in neuroscience and psychology, fostering community partnerships, and promoting innovative approaches to teaching and learning. His vision emphasizes both scientific rigor and real-world impact, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to the rapidly evolving landscape of behavioral and brain sciences.
