So many things have changed and developed in the field of interpreting over the years. Including the “hows” of interpreter education. If you are a working interpreter and/or a recent graduate who holds an Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) (typical for community colleges that housed ITPs in the vocational side of the house and/or had federal grant funding at one time), we have developed a degree completion program for YOUR needs.

The current requirement to sit for the national interpreting exam (casli.org), is to hold a bachelor's degree. Transferring to a traditional Bachelor of Arts or Science degree can be challenging with an AAS as many of the courses do not transfer, thus leaving you to take duplicate courses and/or more courses in order to complete the degree - taking additional time and money, precious resources we would like to conserve for other endeavors.

The Deaf Studies & Professional Studies division at Western Oregon University has developed a unique Bachelor of APPLIED Sciences (BAS) degree pathway to serve you....this degree will allow most (or all) of your AAS credits to count toward your BAS degree completion. Additionally, this degree, entitled, Professional Studies with the Deaf Community has the flexibility to be customized to YOUR career goals and needs.
AND.... it can serve as a pathway to the MA in Interpreting Studies tracks here at WOU as well. We have a couple of options at this point (and a few exciting things in the works):
MAIS: Theory & Practice
MAIS: Advanced Interpreting
MAIS: Teaching Interpreting

We know that as a working interpreter, it is a challenge to commit to specific times or locations for schooling, so we have designed these pathways with that in mind. All courses are available online - some synchronous and others asynchronous - you will not need to relocate in order to complete this option.

Due to the spread of COVID-19 (aka “coronavirus”) in the United States, we recognize that everyone is being impacted in some way or another, whether at work, at home, or through family, friends, and consumers. One of the things we are so proud of our membership for is the concern we have for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind (D/HH/DB) students and the community at large. However, facing such sudden and unprecedented changes in our educational settings is daunting to say the least. How can we better prepare in our professional roles to address such inevitable shifts, such as the transition to virtual instruction? To ensure continued accessibility, which issues should we be ready to address and offer solutions?
