Update: Support services for students

Dear Students:

We know that Hurricane Sandy has left many people in difficult situations that may make travel to the University difficult or even impossible in the short term. Some have lost power or may even have lost their homes. The recovery journey ahead of us will take some time, but working together we will succeed.

Commuter Students Assistance:
Temporary Housing: To assist commuter students in need of housing, the University has available residence hall space. If you need temporary housing or just would like to be on campus until the train and gasoline problems are resolved, send an email to [email protected] and let us know. Residence Education staff will contact you with the move-in details.

MSU Carpool Directory:
Some students had gas or have been able to get it since the storm and may be able to provide a ride for others close by. We encourage all students (those who need a ride as well as those who can provide rides) to sign up on the Montclair State University Carpool Directory at www.montclair.edu/carpool

Coursework Assistance:
The Provost is working with the Deans, department chairs and faculty to assist students as much as possible with catching up with work and the rescheduling of exams and projects. I encourage you to contact each of your faculty members via email and/or Blackboard, explain your particular situation and ask for information on how they will adjust the syllabus for the semester and what you might do to keep up with your work. Some faculty may have posted that information on Blackboard already, so be sure to check that resource first. Doing so will help you plan out your schedule and develop a new action plan for the remainder of the semester.

Residence Hall Students Currently Living Off-Campus:
Any residence hall student who was placed in temporary housing during the storm and has since left campus, please send an email to [email protected] with your name and temporary assignment hall and room number if you will not be returning to campus before Monday, November 5.

NJ Transit:
Most of NJ Transit bus service has returned to regular schedule of operation. Please consult NJ Transit.com for full information regarding bus information. As of today, Morris, Essex and Montclair-Boonton rail service remains suspended until further notice.

Any student who needs special assistance should contact the Dean of Students at [email protected]

It is clear that these are not normal times and we will all need to be a little flexible and have lots of patience until things get better. Do the best you can and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Dr, Karen L. Pennington
Vice President

Intercollegiate Athletic events will take place as scheduled and complete information can be found at www.montclairathletics.com. All performances at Alexander Kasser Theater and John J. Cali School of Music have been cancelled through Sunday, November 4.

We were fortunate that much of the campus was relatively undamaged by the storm. However, a fallen tree is blocking access along Clove Road and has impacted electrical service in that area. Students residing in Sinatra Hall, the Village, and Hawks Crossing have been temporarily relocated to other University residence halls until PSEG is able to restore power to the Clove Road facilities. Dining services will be available on a regular schedule in Sam’s Place and Freeman Dining Hall. In addition, the Red Hawk Diner along with the Sub Connection and Market Place in Blanton Plaza are open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Montclair State University will be closed today, Tuesday, October 30. Day and evening classes have been canceled. All performances, conferences, lectures, athletic events and all other activities that had been scheduled for today are also canceled.

We strongly advise students to remain where you are. If you are in residence, stay here. If you are safe at home, stay there. Commuter students should not come to campus.

Dining services will be available to resident students in Sam’s Place and Freeman Dining Hall on a regular schedule. Regular campus shuttle service is suspended.

We were fortunate that much of the campus was relatively undamaged by the storm. However, a fallen tree is blocking access along Clove Road and has impacted electrical service in that area. Students currently being housed in Sinatra Hall, the Village, and Hawk Crossings will be temporarily relocated to other University residence halls until power is restored to those facilities.

Dear Montclair State Parents:

Knowing that you might be concerned about Hurricane Sandy and its potential impacts, I wanted to assure you that we are monitoring the situation carefully and planning accordingly. With an eye to the safety and well-being of all our campus community members, we have decided to cancel classes for both today and tomorrow. For those students who are residing on campus, we will be providing dining services to them on a regular schedule, and our Office of Residential Education and Services team is here on campus to ensure that their needs are fully met throughout the storm. We will continue to post any significant developments or advisories on the homepage of the University website, so I would encourage you to check there for further updates.

Sincerely,

Susan A. Cole
President
