Experts at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies - CNS reported earlier this year that a suspected new enrichment facility at North Korea’s Yongbyon complex included a central hall likely designed to host centrifuges, along with surrounding office and support areas. Their analysis is now part of new reporting by Newsweek on significant expansion at the site.

According to the article, fresh satellite imagery shows accelerated construction across Yongbyon in recent months, underscoring its critical role in North Korea’s production of plutonium and enriched uranium. These developments highlight growing concerns around the DPRK’s expanding nuclear capabilities.

Researchers at CNS continue to provide independent, technical insights that help the global community understand these developments and assess their implications for regional and international security.

Professor Pablo Oliva and Professor Marie Butcher recently published an article titled “Enhancing University Students’ Learning in CLIL through the Monterey Model (MM).”

In the article, they present the Monterey Model as an integrative, collaborative CLIL approach that uses content-based courses to promote authentic language use in real, meaningful contexts.

They describe pedagogical activities that strengthen students’ language competence while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration among administrators, faculty, curriculum designers, and students.

Their work offers a practical roadmap for institutions seeking to enrich language teaching through interdisciplinary, content-based collaboration.

Professor Jeff Langholz and Professor Fernando DePaolis were recently featured in the Monterey Herald for their new report, “Economic Contributions of Monterey County Agriculture,” commissioned by the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office.

In the report, Professors Langholz and DePaolis analyze the full economic footprint of the county’s agricultural sector — from production and processing to employment and community ripple effects.

contributed $11.706 billion to Monterey County’s economy in 2023 and supported over 81,000 jobs, making it the region’s largest employer.

Their findings highlight the essential role agriculture plays in sustaining the local economy, while also underscoring the resilience and diversity of Monterey County’s crop portfolio.

For one afternoon, the McCone Atrium — a space our community walks through almost every day — transformed into a mini-museum as our community gathered for Art and Coffee, featuring the powerful photography of Craig Lovell.

Students, staff, faculty and local residents wandered through the space with coffee in hand, taking in images that spanned continents, cultures, and moments of quiet human connection. Craig led an informal walking tour, sharing the stories behind his work and giving us a rare glimpse into the creative process behind the lens.

Thank you to Craig Lovell, the Institute Committee on Art in Public Places, and the MIIS Coffee Club for making McCone feel like a gallery for the afternoon and bringing our community together in such a meaningful way.

The Middlebury Institute community recently gathered for a cozy and joyful Campus , a celebration of gratitude, connection, and seasonal comfort.

Students, faculty, and staff came together in the Samson Dining Room to share a festive holiday lunch and enjoy a moment of warmth before the rush of finals and year-end commitments. The room was filled with conversation, laughter, and the simple joy of being together. It was a meaningful pause and a chance to appreciate the community we belong to. 🧡
