April's student of the month is Emily Thompson! Emily's father served in the Army for 12 years and she herself served in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman! She picked UM because it was a smaller school which made makes it easier to connect with her peers and professors. She majors in biology and plans on becoming a doctor once she graduates and eventually develop her own practice. She would also like to study cells and conduct experiments on them and medicine to see how it affects and helps the body.

For the final week we would like to highlight Mary A. Halleran! Mary A. Hallaren enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps in 1942 when the corps was first established and a year later she was the first battalion commander for a WAACS battalion when they were stationed in Europe. By the end of WWII Hallaren obtained the highest rank in the Women's Army Corps, serving as the Director from 1947-1953. She also was a vocal advocate for establishing the ability for women to permanently stay enlisted rather than temporally. In 1948, despite fierce opposition, Hallaren was instrumental in seeing the women's Armed services Integration Act which made permanent enlistment for women official.

This week we would like to remember Colonel Ruby Bradley, a U.S. Army Nurse who served from 1934-1969, participating in both World war II and the Korean War. During her time in service she was awarded a total of 34 medals for her service, making her the most decorated woman in U.S. military history. In 1941, Bradley was captured by Japanese forces in the Philippines and spent 37 months as a prisoner of war. Despite the cruel and harsh conditions she experienced she continued her duties of performing surgeries, delivering babies and caring for soldiers both allies and hostile, earning her the nickname, " Angel in Fatigues." She then went on to serve as a nurse during the Korean War after WWII, mostly serving as a nurse on the front lines. During her time in service she became the third woman in U.S. Army history to become a colonel, served as Director of Nursing activities at Brooke Army Medical Center, and even earned the Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest international honor for nurses. She passed away on May 28, 2002 and is remembered as a symbol of courage, compassion and resilience.

To start off Women's History Month we would like to highlight Command Sergeant Major Yzetta L. Nelson. Nelson was the first woman to be promoted to the highest enlisted rank within the Army of command sergeant major. prior to her being given the rank on March 30, 1968, President Lydon Johnson signed Public Law 90-130, which removed restrictions on advanced military ranks for women and lifted the restriction on the amount of female soldiers who could be in the Army. She served for a total of 26 years, from 1944-1970, serving as a clerk-typist. She was stationed in Germany, Hawaii and Washington, D.C. and promoted to sergeant major in 1966, two years before she would earn her spot in history. After leaving the Army, Nelson traveled the country to deliver speeches about the importance of women in the military and the legacy of the WAC (Women's Army Corp's).

March's student of the month is Magnus Eck! His parents were in the Army and played a meaningful role in who he is today. He picked the University of Montevallo because he felt called to grow his skills as a pianist here. His passion and gift of playing the piano led him to major in Piano Performance. When asked what he would like to do when he graduates he said," My goal is to become a professional pianist, performing and glorifying God inside of recital halls with excellence, passion and purpose."
