Welcome to the Department of History and Political Science page! This is where you can stay informed regarding the "Department Happenings" and hear about awesome student opportunities. Located in the Heart of Dixie, Montgomery, Alabama is officially the Cradle of the Confederacy and the Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. This unique vantage point provides an important backdrop to unders

tand history and political struggle. The Department of History and Political Science welcomes all those desiring to study history and political science in a city shaped by both. A number of us who teach at ASU are civil rights babies — born during or in the wake of the movement. We are privileged to walk in the footsteps of Rosa Parks, Jo Ann Robinson, E. Nixon, Virginia Durr, Ralph Abernathy and Martin Luther King Jr. We are honored to carry on their legacy and work until “justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Dr. Franklin graduated from Alabama State College (now Alabama State University) in 1962.

Dr. Harold Franklin, a Talladega native and the first Black student to integrate Auburn University in 1964, has passed away according to Terry Metropolitan Mortuary. Dr. Franklin ran into barriers at Auburn when he submitted his thesis to get his master's degree. The roadblocks ultimately kept Franklin from graduating from Auburn. The university invited Franklin to come back to the school in February of 2020 to finally defend his thesis. Fifty-six years after first walking onto the school’s campus, Franklin strode across the stage to be honored as part of the 2020 fall commencement ceremony at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Dr. Franklin worked at Terry Metropolitan Mortuary in Talladega for more than four decades.
