Auburn to Close Friday for Juneteenth Holiday

Auburn University will close Friday in observance of Juneteenth, which is considered an official holiday for employees.

Juneteenth acknowledges the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce that all enslaved people be freed. This historic event occurred 2 1/2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and is now the nation’s oldest known tradition honoring the end of slavery and commemorating Black freedom.

In 1980, Texas became the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.

Juneteenth is observed on June 19, and is also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day, marking the end of US slavery.

As part of our weekly spotlight series, we’re introducing you to the people who serve our community through the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and help answer everyday questions with research-based information and support.

This week’s spotlight is on Dominguez Hurry, EFNEP Nutrition Educator.

Dominguez has worked with Extension for 21 years and serves the community through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP).

What he enjoys most about working with Extension is the opportunity to serve others and help clients live healthier lifestyles.

One service people may not realize Extension provides is free nutrition education classes for youth and adults.

One of his favorite success stories is seeing both youth and adult participants become willing to try new foods and make healthier choices.

His favorite part of the job is conducting food demonstrations with the youth he works with and helping them learn about nutrition through hands-on experiences.

A fun fact about Dominguez is that he owns a 1972 Chevy Nova SS!

To learn more about EFNEP programs or get involved, contact Dominguez at [email protected] or call 334-421-1786.

Follow along each week as we spotlight more of the people behind Extension and the programs that strengthen our community!

Balloon releases have long been a popular way to mark special occasions such as weddings, graduations, and memorials. While it may seem harmless to watch colorful balloons float into the sky, the reality is far more troubling. Every balloon released eventually returns to earth, where it becomes dangerous litter that threatens wildlife and pollutes the environment. Read more:

When balloons from balloon releases fall back to earth, they become dangerous litter that threaten wildlife and pollute the environment.
