🌟April BSN Nursing Alumni Spotlight🌟
Some stories don’t just inspire—they redefine what strength, resilience, and purpose truly look like.
From the moment she stepped onto campus in Fall 2009 as a student-athlete with a dream of becoming a nurse, she has met every challenge with determination and heart.
Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2011, she continued her education through treatment, taking online classes and refusing to lose sight of her goal. She returned to campus in remission and began nursing school, only to face a relapse in 2013 that led to chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. In November 2013, she received a life-saving transplant from her twin sister—an experience that would forever shape both her life and her calling.
She came back again. And again.
After being declared in remission, she returned to campus to finish what she started, graduating with her BSN in Spring 2015 and passing the NCLEX that summer.
She began her career in the NICU at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where her compassion for patients and families quickly set her apart. But even as a nurse, her fight wasn’t over. In 2016, she faced Hodgkin’s Lymphoma once more while continuing to care for her tiny patients while undergoing antibody treatments. By Spring 2017, she was declared in remission again.
Since then, her journey has continued to evolve in remarkable ways.
She advanced her practice on the Vascular Access Team, now serving as a PICC RN and specializing in complex, high-skill procedures. She became an RN innovator, working to develop a device aimed at reducing pain for children during procedures. She stepped into the classroom as a clinical instructor, shaping the next generation of nurses. And she is currently pursuing her MSN in Nursing Education, with graduation on the horizon.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she is a wife and a mom of two daughters, including one who spent time in the NICU herself, bringing her story full circle in a deeply personal way.
Now, 9 years in remission, she continues to turn her experiences into purpose—connecting with patients in a way that only someone who has walked that path truly can.
Her story is one of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering dedication to nursing and we are proud to spotlight this incredible alum, McKenzie Deeds!
