Artsmart had an amazing day at Take a Chance Ranch. We explored watercolor crayons and shapes by creating landscapes and still lifes. We used Levi the pony as a live model to create abstract horse art. And what kind of day would it be without an ATV ride??? A full day with tons of great experiences.

I'm starting the Drawing from Influences: Expressionists; artsmart after school program. I put together a mini movie for the kids on Expressionism. We're going to be using watercolor pencils and watercolor crayons. I will be posting art as it gets created. I hope you like it!

Nordstrom 5th graders explored resist painting with watered down tempera, oil pastel and watercolor paper. The subject was California poppies. I love their fresh contemporary take on a traditional state icon.

5th grade perspective workshop. Students created atmospheric perspective thumbnails in chalk pastel. They then sized up their artwork on larger paper. Thomas Hart Benton was our inspiration.

Payons on watercolor paper. Students were inspired by artist Charles Scheeler. Students created a sketch using a ruler and a colored pencil on one side of a vertically folded paper. They filled in their cityscape with payons. Water was brushed onto the other side. Paper was then folded dry into wet and rubbed. Et viola'!

Nordstrom second graders create California poppy tear art in the Symbolism workshop. They were inspired by Claude monet and the complimentary contrast that happens when orange poppies meet blue sky.

Nordstrom 5th graders created symmetry, perspective and complimentary color contrast with watercolor paper and Payons. First, paper is folded and drawn on half of the page. Second, water is applied to the blank half, then image is sandwiched, rubbed and viola...a cool piece of art emerges!!!
