💧Mobile Irrigation Lab Center Pivot Uniformity Tests

Last week, UGA Extension Calhoun County worked with the UGA Water Team to conduct two Mobile Irrigation Lab tests on center pivots here in Calhoun County.

These tests help evaluate how uniformly and efficiently a pivot is applying water across the field. Good irrigation uniformity matters because it helps growers make better irrigation decisions, reduce wasted water, improve crop performance, and identify potential issues such as worn nozzles, pressure problems, leaks, or uneven application patterns.

A big thank you to the UGA Water Team for coming down and helping provide this valuable service to our local growers.

If you have a center pivot and would like to have it tested, please reach out to the UGA Extension Calhoun County office. This is a great opportunity to learn more about your irrigation system and make sure it is operating as efficiently as possible.

🌱🐄 🫐 6th Annual Farm, Fit, & Fun Day! 🍅🚲🥛

We had a great time last week with the 2nd grade students from Pataula Charter Academy for our 6th Annual Farm, Fit, & Fun event!

The morning started at the UGA Extension office, where students rotated through three hands on learning stations:

🌱 Raised Bed Garden Station
Students transplanted tomatoes 🍅, peppers 🌶️, sweet corn 🌽, cucumbers 🥒, squash, and more into our raised beds. These were plants they started from seed back in March, so it was exciting for them to see the next step in the growing process! They also explored our blackberry plants and learned more about how they grow.

🚲🫐🍓Smoothie Bike Station
Students used pedal power to blend healthy fruit smoothies, featuring local blueberries generously donated by a local farm. It was a fun way to connect nutrition, exercise, and agriculture all in one activity!

🫘 Seed Planting & Greenhouse Station
Students planted the next crop that will go into our garden after the summer harvest, helping them understand that gardening is a continuous cycle of planting, growing, harvesting, and starting again.

After our garden activities, we headed over to Morgan City Park for a special visit from the Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom. This 30-foot mobile classroom includes a fully operational milking parlor and a live cow used for milking and feeding demonstrations. Students learned where milk comes from, how it is produced and processed, the nutritional value of dairy products, and how dairy farmers care for their animals and natural resources.

A big thank you to Pataula Charter Academy, the Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom, and everyone who helped make this hands on, educational, and fun day such a success!

Hot off the press! Check out our all new guide published through USDA. This was a BIG project and I'm glad to see it pushed across the finish line so producers have access to this information during this persistent drought!
