Learning about nutrition isn't just reading about food—it's experiencing where it comes from, how it's prepared, and the role it plays in everyday life.

Over two weeks in Greece, WVU students explored the people, places, and traditions behind one of the world's most studied dietary patterns while gaining a deeper appreciation for the connections between food, culture, and health. 🇬🇷

"I am one of the lucky people who gets to get paid to do something they love. I wake up in the morning and I'm excited about what I do." 💛💙

Deonté Hill didn't plan on a career in energy and land management. He started at West Virginia University Institute of Technology as an engineering major, and then he found the WVU Davis College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Energy, Environmental and Land Management Program.

Sitting in one class was all it took. Today, he develops renewable energy assets and projects worth billions of dollars, drafting contracts, navigating permitting, coordinating landowners and shaping the infrastructure that supports America's growing power demand.

And sometimes, he changes a life.

"I've had landowners who had failing farms. We came in and were able to use the land for development. As a result, those landowners are retired now and don't have to worry anymore."

Meet Lilly Overfield, an Animal and Nutritional Sciences student!

“I am going to miss the Davis College family. I enjoy walking in each day and being greeted by familiar faces. The faculty and staff truly care for their students, and it shows. They know you by your name and goals, and always make sure to check in on you so you can be successful. You truly cannot find a better educational experience! Not only are the faculty extremely knowledgeable and encouraging, but the opportunities through the Davis College are endless. The number of research programs, hands-on opportunities, and real-world situations is like no other. I feel prepared to continue my education with the tools Davis has provided me. My experience at a land-grant institution has shown me the value of continuing my education and giving back to strengthen the community.”

Senior Spotlight 🎓
Meet Kaelyn Cogar, an Animal and Veterinary Studies and Equine Studies student!

“I’ve known that becoming a veterinarian is what I was meant to do ever since I knew what the word meant! Pursuing veterinary medicine gives me the opportunity to provide services that are hard to obtain in some areas of West Virginia. This state is my home, so I want to spend as much time as I can here and help the people. After graduation, I’ll miss all the opportunities that WVU offers, and also throwing a ball with my dog in the Evansdale courtyard. My best advice is to push yourself, but remember to enjoy those little things, too.”

Meet Matthew Helmondollar, an Agriculture and Extension Education student!

“I always knew the impact that WVU Extension had in West Virginia, but it wasn’t until I spent a summer as an ECI that everything clicked. After a week at 4-H camp, every kid lined up for me to sign their camp t-shirts, and I realized this was exactly what I was meant to do. Being a 3rd generation Mountaineer, WVU felt like home from the start, and the connections I’ve made here proved that. My biggest advice is to cherish every moment, because 4 years really do go by in what feels like 4 seconds.” 💛💙

She’s not horsing around with her education! Annie came to WVU knowing it felt right, but she discovered so much more by getting involved, building connections, and embracing everything the University had to offer. As she graduates, she reflects on all of her favorite parts about her time at WVU. Next stop, vet school! 🎓💛

Senior Spotlight! 🎓
Meet Emily Marstiller, an environmental soil and water science and geology student!

“My experiences in FFA and land judging, sparked my interest in agriculture and how conservation practices can enhance production. Understanding how conservation and reclamation can preserve the environment and amplify ecological services drove me towards natural resources. I’m interested in how soil science and hydrology can be utilized in conservation, agriculture, ecology, and other fields to make a positive difference in the environment through work which as sampling, consulting, or research. Being outside and knowing that I’m making a difference in my work brings me so much satisfaction.”

Throughout her journey, Corinne Hazel, an environmental microbiology grad, has learned to trust the process and let the pieces fall into place when they’re supposed to. 🎓

To date, Corinne has secured a doctoral research project at the University of Cambridge, discovered a new species of fungus, presented her research at many conferences, studied abroad in England, became a Goldwater Scholar, was awarded a WVU Outstanding Senior Award, and received the J and C Nath Outstanding Honors Graduate Award from the WVU Honors College.

“It sometimes feels like random chance the way my life has worked out. Saying yes to one opportunity leads me to another, and I just think ‘why not do this?’ My mom always taught me to ask, ‘why not me?’ Why can’t I be a scholar who discovers cool things in research, wins scholarships, goes on trips and achieves all of these things I’m proud of? I’ve learned to just go for it.” 🌱 🔬 🌍✈️
