Happy 25 years of Davis! 🥳 💛💙

On September 4th, 2001 (25 years ago today!) the West Virginia University Davis College proudly adopted the “Davis” name thanks to the generosity of 2 Morgantown sisters, Gladys Gwendolyn Davis and Vivian Davis Michael.

That same day, the Davis-Michael Scholars Program was created to support animal and nutritional sciences students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine and to help ensure high-quality veterinary care across West Virginia.

School is back in session, but we're still thinking about all the cool stuff our students got to do this summer! Like G Dacombe, an environmental, soil and water sciences student, who got to conduct research in Costa Rica! This project looked at hotel wastewater treatment systems in Monteverde from an engineering and anthropological lens.

“My favorite part of the project was talking to community members to understand their views on sustainability and water resources, as well as getting to know how people view their impact on the environment in a different country. People seem really aware of environmental issues here, it's great to see! I hope to do work abroad in the future, and this experience has really helped me contextualize how scientists and engineers need to shape their work according to the people they serve, which has been very special to learn about firsthand.”

Clock in with Viviana Woofter, an animal and nutritional sciences student, as a Wildlife Operations Intern at Nemacolin! 🦉

“I’m lucky enough to work with animals big and small, including livestock, reptiles, big cats, bears, and wolves. My daily duties include providing food, drink, and enrichment for the animals in the section I am working on each day. A really fun part of my job is getting to teach others about these awesome animals! I aspire to one day become a wildlife vet, so this job has been a spectacular opportunity that allows me to get one step closer to my dream. I have learned so much in my time here at Nemacolin, and I am excited to use my knowledge in my future career and to continue to teach others about animals!” 🐢🐅🐍

Congratulations to Davis College student Willie Taylor, 1 of 4 Hazel Ruby McQuain Graduate Scholarship recipients, who will receive support to pursue graduate education aimed at addressing the needs of communities across the Mountain State. 💛💙

Willie earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from WVU and is continuing their education as a graduate student. Their master’s research will focus on food access in West Virginia, including efforts to better understand food deserts and connect communities with resources such as farmers markets, food cooperatives, community gardens, and food assistance programs.

Through research, education, and community partnerships, they hope to strengthen local food networks while helping West Virginians connect with resources available in their own communities. Congrats, Willie! 🌱

Clock in with Audrey Morrison, a horticulture student, as a Horticulture Intern at Nemacolin! 🌿🌸

“Throughout my internship at Nemacolin, I have gained so much experience in the horticulture field, ranging from landscaping to hydroponic microgreen production. Some of my favorite experiences from this internship include learning to prune roses, installing landscapes throughout the resort, caring for the indoor plant collection in the greenhouse, practicing tasks such as deadheading dahlias and other herbaceous plants, and experiencing microgreen cultivation. I am so grateful for the opportunity to intern here and learn from and work alongside the horticultural team!”
