Mining Engineering at WVU

Mining Engineering at WVU Mining engineers deal with the science and technology of extracting and processing minerals from a naturally occurring environment.

The program at WVU, which is one of only 12 ABET accredited mining engineering programs in the United States, dates back to 1868 when the first mine surveying course was offered. The Department provides educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Degree options at the undergraduate level include mining engineering, and dual degree programs in mining engineering and civil

and environmental engineering, mining engineering and civil engineering, and mining engineering and geology. At the graduate level, degrees are offered in mining engineering and mineral processing.

Dr. Amy McBrayer has taken a group of mining engineering students to visit Leer mine in West Virginia. Cheston Weese, Director of Process Improvement, provided a presentation on the Leer and Leer South operations as well as the development sequence and longwall operation. The students toured technology room where they operate the shearer remotely, dispatch, and went underground to the longwall section. The students also saw the impoundment and the loadout facilities as well as surface infrastructure. The General Manager, Engineering Manager, Mine Superintendent, Mine Engineers, and Human Resources Manager were all available to answer any student questions and provide insight during and after the tour.
