Our graduate students had busy summers filled with hikes, travel and plenty of work!

Pauline spent two weeks in Hawai'i and even hiked a mountain. Very muddy, very beautiful and very fun. Sophie spent the summer on the incredible journey of becoming an aunt. She was happy to grow, learn and enjoy time with her sister and niece during her break. Harley balled out volunteering, concert-hopping and working with NCAA baseball. Jeff went on a weeklong West Virginia road trip, enjoying all the natural beauty and small-town accommodations his home state has to offer. Last but not least, Cassidy kept herself busy preserving memories for newlyweds throughout the summer wedding season. 📸

We love seeing our grad students venture out into the world and come back refreshed for the fall semester. What was the highlight of your summer?

The Reed School of Media and Communications is celebrating our faculty and students for their accomplishments at the 2026 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Conference!

Dr. Juan Liu earned the First Place Faculty Competition Paper Award in the Media Ethics Division, while Dr. Joseph Jones received Second Place, giving Reed School faculty the top two honors in the division’s faculty paper competition.

Jenna Stewart, program coordinator for the Public Interest Communication Research Lab, and Pauline Alterio, a 4+1 M.S.J. student, presented research co-authored with Dr. Julia Fraustino during the AEJMC Public Relations Division Poster Session. Dr. Liu also presented research during the poster session.

Faculty also shared their work across several conference sessions. Dr. Bob Britten presented during the Great Ideas for Teaching session, and Dr. Jones presented Research in Progress in the Magazine Media Division.

We're proud to see our Reed School faculty and students recognized on a national stage for their accomplishments and meaningful contributions to our fields!

The WVU Reed School’s graduate students are ready to take on a new semester! 💛💙

Our on-ground M.S. in Journalism (M.S.J.) program prepares students for advanced professional and scholarly work across journalism, media and strategic communication fields, such as advertising and public relations. Students can tailor their graduate experience to their interests and career goals while developing advanced research, analytical and professional skills.

We also offer an accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s option (ABM B.S.J. to M.S.J./4+1 program), which allows qualifying undergraduate students to complete both degrees in five years.

Alison Smallwood, a Sports and Adventure Media major in the WVU Reed School of Media and Communications, was recognized with a digital media award at the 51st Gracie Awards for her “Mountaineer Playbook” segment “3-in-30.”

Emma Fleming, a member of the Honors College from Parkersburg, is graduating with dual degrees in English and multidisciplinary media studies, with minors in journalism, entertainment media and strategic social media. Congratulations to Emma and all of our 2026 Outstanding Seniors!

Six members of the West Virginia University Class of 2026 and two December 2025 graduates have earned the Order of Augusta, the University’s most prestigious honor for academic excellence, leadership and service. The eight inductees were selected from the 52 WVU Foundation Outstanding Seniors.

Hosted at the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center and WVU Media Innovation Center, the energy throughout the day reflected exactly what this event is all about: preparing students for the real world.
