We're excited to welcome Sarah Hann as a presenter for the WVU Smithsonian Folkways World Music Pedagogy Course!

A music educator and percussionist from Lewisburg, West Virginia, Sarah brings a wealth of experience and passion to music education. She holds degrees in Music Education and Percussion Performance and currently teaches elementary music while inspiring students through creative, culturally responsive approaches to learning.

Sarah has presented professional development workshops on hand drumming, bucket drumming, children's literature in the music classroom, and women composers in elementary music curricula. Her dedication to excellence has earned her both the Greenbrier County Teacher of the Year Award and the West Virginia Society for General Music Teacher of the Year Award.

She is also the author of the recently published Teaching Music magazine article, “The Making of Future Folklorists,” reflecting her commitment to helping students connect with music, culture, and community.

We’re excited to welcome Bridget Jamison to the WVU Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy, June 15–18!

Bridget Jamison is the Instruction & Public Services Archivist at the West Virginia & Regional History Center at WVU Libraries, where she connects students, instructors, and researchers with archival materials and regional history resources. Beyond the archives, Bridget is an active participant in the vibrant tradition of shape-note singing and Sacred Harp music.

Since attending her first shape-note singing in 2015, Bridget has traveled across the South and Mid-Atlantic, singing with communities in Houston, Washington, D.C., and beyond. A Camp Fasola participant and advocate for preserving and sharing this rich musical tradition, she is currently co-organizing a local singing group in Morgantown—and is always ready to teach others how to “sing the shapes”!

Introducing one of our virtual presenters, renowned scholar and educator Patricia Shehan Campbell, at the West Virginia University Smithsonian Folkways World Music Pedagogy Course, June 15–18!

Patricia Shehan Campbell, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, has spent decades advancing world music pedagogy and intercultural understanding through music education around the globe. A recipient of three Fulbright awards and internationally recognized for her work in children’s musical cultures and global music teaching, Dr. Campbell has authored and edited landmark publications including Teaching Music Globally, Songs in Their Heads, and the Routledge World Music Pedagogy Series.

Her work with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the Association for Cultural Equity, and the Global Jukebox continues to shape music education worldwide. We are thrilled to have her join us virtually for this inspiring professional learning experience centered on culturally responsive and globally informed music teaching.

🎶 Meet another featured presenter, Chris Haddox, for the WVU Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy!

Chris Haddox is an Associate Professor in the WVU School of Art and Design, where he teaches sustainable design focused on the built environment. His creative scholarship explores the rich folk music traditions of the southern West Virginia coalfield counties, preserving and celebrating the region’s cultural heritage.

In addition to his academic work, Chris is an accomplished singer/songwriter who performs across the Mountain State — from songwriter festivals and concert venues to intimate house concerts. His original music draws deeply from his experiences growing up in southern West Virginia, offering authentic stories and heartfelt connections through song.

We are honored to welcome Taras Filenko as a presenter for the WVU Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy, June 15–18.

An internationally recognized scholar, performer, and advocate for Ukrainian music and culture, Dr. Filenko has devoted more than four decades to the fields of ethnomusicology, music history, performance, and cultural studies. A graduate and former Associate Dean of the National Academy of Music in Kyiv, he later earned a doctorate in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh and has presented concerts, lectures, and master classes throughout Europe, North America, and beyond.

Through music, scholarship, and performance, Dr. Filenko brings powerful insight into the role of culture, identity, and resilience in times of conflict. His recent international work has raised both awareness and humanitarian support for Ukraine while introducing audiences around the world to the richness of Ukrainian musical traditions.

🎶 Meet presenter Mason Atha at the WVU Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy!

A West Virginia-based music educator, bassist, and guitarist, Mason Atha is passionate about sharing the joy of music through both performance and teaching. Specializing in folk, bluegrass, and jazz, Mason has performed at renowned venues and events including Nashville’s Station Inn and the International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass.

Currently teaching middle school choir and orchestra in Nicholas County, WV, Mason brings a student-centered approach that blends technical skill development with meaningful musical understanding. His work reflects a deep belief in music as a powerful force for connection, creativity, and community.

🥁🌍 Meet Another Featured Presenter: Chanler Bailey!

We’re proud to welcome Chanler Bailey to the WVU Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in World Music Pedagogy, happening June 15–18, 2026.

Chanler brings decades of experience in the percussive arts—from Drum & Bugle Corps to collegiate instruction—and a lifelong dedication to steel pan. While studying at West Virginia University, he trained under Dr. Phil Faini and became deeply involved in the World Music Program, performing across the state with the Percussion ’90 Ensemble.

His journey took a pivotal turn in 1992 when steel drum pioneer Dr. Ellie Mannette launched the University Tuning Project at WVU. Chanler began an apprenticeship that led to over 20 years as a craftsman with Mannette Instruments, traveling as a tuner and clinician while preserving and advancing the steel pan tradition.

Today, Chanler continues to inspire through teaching, performing, and his studio, cbStudios, and has been teaching steel band at WVU since 2021.
